Last week, a Cambodia ministry sent a document to the Government of Cambodia's border provinces, stating that African swine fever is currently breaking out in Asian countries

To prevent the swine fever from spreading from places to Cambodia, the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has asked the authorities of the border provinces of Cambodia to prevent the illegal import of live pigs, pork and pork products into Cambodia.

Facing the above situation, it is forecasted that in the coming time, Cambodia will strengthen inspection and control of unofficial import activities for live pigs, pork and pork products on the border between Vietnam and Cambodia. Along with that, Cambodian authorities will tighten quarantine for pork and pork products imported through land border gates with Vietnam.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that businesses and traders exporting live pigs, pork, and pork products on the border with Cambodia should pay attention to exporting by official channels, ensuring hygiene and safety requirements and prepare full animal quarantine entry permits.

The Asia-Africa Market Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade said that Cambodia's pork consumption demand is about 7,000-8000 pigs per day (a 60-kilogram pig). Meanwhile, domestic supply can meet 6,000 pigs per day and need to import more than 1,000 pigs per day.

To meet consumer demand, Cambodian traders import live pigs mainly from neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.

Cambodian traders mainly import live pigs and pork through border trade to save time and costs and avoid having to apply for quarantine certificates as required by the authorities of the two countries.
