Vietnam weather forecast

Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will continue to sizzle under the heatwave, with temperatures hovering around 35-38C, even exceeding 38C in some places, the National Hydrometeorological Forecast Centre said.

Ultraviolet (UV) index in Da Nang stands at level 11 on July 12, which is defined as very strong, raising the risk of skin damage in direct sunlight, read weatheronline.co.uk.

As the hot spell is highly exacerbated by low humidity, there are warnings of fire and explosion hazards, as well as a high risk of forest fire.

It is forecast that the hot weather will continue to sweep the northern and central provinces in the next days.

The prolonged heatwave may cause health issues and increased risks of fires and other accidents at residential areas as demand for electricity spikes.

Statistics show since the beginning of this year, the average temperature of the whole country has been 1 to 2.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average level of previous years, and the upward trend is forecast to last till October this year.

Meanwhile, due to the low-pressure area combined with wind convergence of up to 5000 m, showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the northern mountainous region.

The Chinese National Meteorological Center said rainstorms will still reign over Southwest China, South of the Yangtze River Region, Jianghan Region, and Jianghuai Region. From the daytime to tonight, the rain belt will somewhat move northward. Heavy downpour will lash northern Jiangxi, northeastern Hunan, and central and northern Sichuan Basin. There will be severe convective weather like short-range heavy rainfall. The hourly intensity will reach 30-50mm. The National Meteorological Center continued to release yellow warning of rainstorm.

Hubei province’s Xianning and Jingzhou cities, and Jiangxi province’s Nanchang and Shangrao cities have declared “red alerts” over the past two days after torrential rain triggered landslides and inundated roads and farmland, with parts of the river threatening to burst its banks.

Experts say the newly-issued top-level warnings in the four cities along China's Yangtze river highlight the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather from climate change and the risks of overdevelopment on flood plains.

China has blamed unusual weather conditions, including humidity carried from the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, as the immediate cause, but it has also said long-term changes in climate patterns have made it more vulnerable, CNA reported.

According to SCMP, torrential rains are causing more floods along the Yangtze River. The seasonal floodwaters first hit the regions of Sichuan and Chongqing in the southwest and Hubei in central China in late June. On Thursday, China’s National Meteorological Centre warned of more downpours in southern parts of the country in the coming days.

The damages the massive floods bring along have been tremendous. To date, a total of 140 people have died or are missing and 30.20 million have been affected due to floods in 27 provincial-level regions across the country. The accumulated economic losses have exceeded 60 billion yuan (USD 8.6 billion), according to CGTN.

Heavy downpours that caused dozens of deaths on the main island of Kyushu will continue in wide areas of western and eastern Japan at least through July 12, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The seasonal rain front is projected to remain stationary and will likely dump torrential rain on many parts of the country, leading to possible flooding and landslides.

“It would not be surprising to see a disaster strike anywhere in the country,” the agency said.

Rainfall amounts on July 12 are estimated at: up to 300-400 mm in the Shikoku region and northern Kyushu; 250-350 mm in the Tokai region; 200-300 mm in southern Kyushu; 150-250 mm in the Kanto, Koshin and Kinki regions; 150-250 mm in the Chugoku region; 100-200 mm in the Tohoku region; and 100-150 mm in the Hokuriku region.

The extreme weather has left over 60 people dead and a dozen missing over the past week. Officials in the city of Hitoyoshi also say they've been unable to contact 40 people there.

Survivors in the affected areas are trying to recover what they can before the downpours resume, NHK reported.
