WHO warns of the second wave of COVID-19

Countries, where coronavirus infections are declining, could still face an "immediate second peak" if they let up too soon on measures to halt the outbreak, the World Health Organization said on Monday.

According to WHO emergencies head Mike Ryan, ''when we speak about a second wave classically what we often mean is there will be a first wave of the disease by itself, and then it recurs months later. But we need to be cognizant of the fact that the disease can jump up at any time.''

Ryan said epidemics often come in waves, which means that outbreaks could come back later this year in places where the first wave has subsided. There was also a chance that infection rates could rise again more quickly if measures to halt the first wave were lifted too soon, WION reported.

The WHO emergencies head emphasizes that the US and European countries should continue to implement tracking and testing measures.

The number of Covid-19 cases worldwide was nearing the 5.7 million mark on Wednesday, while the deaths have increased to more than 352,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Protests in Minneapolis over death of George Floyd after arrest

Hundreds of protesters gathered on Tuesday evening to demand justice for George Floyd, an African American man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck as he lay on the ground during an arrest. Footage of the incident showed Floyd shouting ‘I cannot breathe’ and ‘Don’t kill me’, according to the Guardian.

According to NBC news, emotion and tension ran high as demonstrations became unruly, with windows damaged, graffiti sprayed and a police car vandalized. Officers in riot gear confronted protesters and fired tear gas.

One person was shot in a non-life-threatening incident, said police spokesman John Elder. A suspect fled the scene. It wasn't clear if the violence was related to the protests.

The shooting happened inside a building near the site where Floyd was detained a day earlier.

Floyd was pinned to the ground by an officer who put his knee on Floyd's neck for about eight minutes in an incident that was captured on video. "Please, please, please, I can't breathe," Floyd, who was black, begged the white officer.

"My stomach hurts," he said. "My neck hurts. Please, please. I can't breathe."

Protesters filled the intersection where Floyd died, carrying banners that read, “I can’t breathe” and “Jail killer KKKops.”

They later marched to a police station where officers in riot gear confronted them and deployed tear gas and fired projectiles. As rain fell, some protesters kicked canisters toward police.

Putin says Russia to hold postponed Victory Day parade on June 24

As reported by Xinhua net, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that the country's military parade to mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory against the Nazis in World War II will be held on June 24.

Putin postponed the Victory Day parade last month from its traditional date of May 9, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Putin also announced that the Immortal Regiment march, a tradition in which millions of people across Russia parade with portraits of their relatives who fought in World War II, will take place on July 26.

As Russia usually celebrates Navy Day on the last Sunday of July, Putin also ordered a traditional Navy parade at the country's main naval bases to be held on July 26.

Covid-19 detected in breast milk, announced German researchers

While it remains unclear whether severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can be shed into breastmilk and transmitted to a child through breastfeeding or not, German researchers have found Covid-19 in human milk, reported the Nation Thailand from the confirmation of Dr Thira Woratanarat, Chulalongkorn University’s professor of medicine.

According to the discovery published in The Lancet journal on May 21, a group of researchers tested two women, who had given birth to babies, using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction procedure. "We examined milk from two nursing mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2. Both mothers were informed about the study and gave informed consent", announced the Lancet.

The virus was found in one mother on the ninth day of her infection. For the mother 2, "we detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in milk samples for 4 consecutive days", said the researchers.

The Nation revealed that around 94,800 to 132,000 viruses exist in each cubic centimetre of breastmilk, and found this mother’s infant infected by the virus as well. However, the researchers could not conclude whether the infant had contracted Covid-19 from its mother or from other sources.

According to The Nation, this research would lead to proper ways to treat those who are pregnant or had given birth to babies.
