Within the framework of providing assistance for victims and potential victims of trafficking in Quang Xuong District, Thanh Hoa Province, funded by the British Embassy in Vietnam, World Vision Vietnam joined hands with local partners to hand over the equipment for 16 beneficiary households in Quang Trung and Quang Chinh Communes.
Worth more than US$ 4,407, this support package includes equipment for production and business, such as refrigerator and equipment for catering and grocery business, and sewing machines. Other equipment for agricultural and fishery production.
Thus, after two handovers, so far, 25 households have received support from the project, with a total value of more than US$ 13,647.
The "Tailored livelihood assistance for victims and potential victims of trafficking" project is a joint effort of World Vision Vietnam, the British Embassy in Vietnam, Department of Social Evils Prevention and Combat (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs), Bureau of Prevention of Social Evils (Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Thanh Hoa), Center for Business Study and Assistance, and leaders of target villages, to reduce the risks of human trafficking.
The project aims to enhance the integration of victims and potential victims of human trafficking through the application of livelihood development models and methods, including: Internal Resource-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach; business training to help raise awareness of local livelihood development opportunities and develop a business plan; and other market-oriented livelihood supports.
Human trafficking crimes via labour migration is still a pressing issue in Vietnam. Most of the victims have difficult economic backgrounds and are unemployed, lacking social knowledge and skills. Last month, World Vision Vietnam also handed over the equipment for 16 beneficiary households in Quang Trung and Quang Chinh Communes.
With a total value of more than US$ 9,242, this support package includes refrigerator and equipment for catering and grocery business, and sewing machines, along with other equipment for agricultural and fishery production.
Vietnam is located in a hot spot of human trafficking. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and Interpol, human trafficking has become complicated in the Asia-Pacific, especially the Greater Mekong Sub-region, in recent years.
From 2010 to June 2021, Vietnam uncovered nearly 3,500 cases involving 5,000 traffickers and some 7,500 victims across all its 63 cities and provinces.
The victims, mostly from vulnerable groups in the rural and mountainous areas, are trafficked for sex, labour and their body parts, among other reasons.
Efforts to combat human trafficking must continue promoting and increasing access to livelihood income-generating opportunities, with a view to ensuring economic independence of potential victims and improving the economic situation for vulnerable segments of the population.
