Based on data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported that in the first four months of this year, crab exports of Vietnam reached US $ 44.5 million, increasing by 39.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The main crab export markets of Vietnam are China, the US, Japan and EU respectively, thanhnien.vn reported.

In particular, China moved from the 4th position on Vietnam's crab imports to the leading position in the first 4 months of 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, crabs exported from Vietnam to China in the first 4 months of 2020 reached more than US $ 13 million, increasing by nearly 394 percent compared to the same period last year.

Besides, Vietnam's crab exports to Japan also grew well by 37.4 percent and reached 10.3 million US dollars in the first 4 months of this year. In contrast, Vietnamese crabs exported to the US and EU markets decreased by 18.3 percent and 17 percent respectively.

Additionally, China also increased the purchase of grilled chopped fish and surimi with a turnover of 4 months reaching 14.8 million US dollars, increasing by 37 percent compared to the same period last year. China is the only market among the main ones increasing the import of grilled chopped fish and surimi from Vietnam in the first four months of 2020. These statistics show that this market has increased the demand for processed and ready-to-eat products, which have affordable price as grilled chooped fish, surimi in the context of the coronavirus outbreak.

VASEP identifies that after controlling the Covid-19, since March, the demand for seafood of China has recovered. Vietnam's seafood products exported to China increased continuously, such as by 35 percent in April and 20 percent in May. By the end of May, Vietnam's seafood exports to China were lower than the same period last year about 2 percent. It is expected that by the end of June, exports to this market shall remain equivalent or slightly increase compared to the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, Japan stabilized demand with the purchase value from Vietnam increased continuously over the first months of the year. In May, seafood exported from Vietnam to Japan increased by 9 percent followed by a rise by 16 percent in April.

With this growth momentum, Japan is expected to be the largest market for Vietnam's seafood consumption this year and will make up a considerable part for the decline in EU and the US markets.
