IOM Expert Appreciates Vietnam's Efforts to Protect Rights and Interests of Migrants
	Migration Contributes to Changing Women's Roles in Asian Families

The Consular Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, coordinated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to hold a hybrid training course on safe migration and protection of Vietnamese citizens abroad on June 25-26.

Attending the training course in Hoa Binh were about 60 delegates from the Ministries of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, National Defense, Public Security, Justice, representatives of departments and branches of 18 Northern and Central localities, and several Vietnamese representative agencies abroad attended virtually.

Speaking at the opening of the training course, Phan Thi Minh Giang, deputy director of the Consular Department, emphasized that in the context of migration of Vietnamese citizens abroad increasing again after the Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to accurately assess the migration patterns, trends and well solve problems in international migration management, including the problem of fraudulent recruitment at online fraud establishments in Southeast Asia.

Therefore, this training course not only provides updated information, assessments, and analysis on the migration situation and citizen protection work, but also contributes to strengthening connection and coordination between ministries, agencies, and localities as well as with Vietnamese representative agencies abroad, creating a safe migration environment, protecting the rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens migrating abroad.

IOM Chief of Mission in Vietnam Park Mi-Hyung, said that according to the organization's 2024 World Migration Report, there are currently 281 million migrants globally, comprising some 3.6% of the global population, of which Asia is the origin of more than 40% of international migrants.

According to Park, in the context of the increasing number of international migrants, the key drivers of migration are increasingly complex and diverse, along with the complicated situation of human trafficking for criminal exploitation is becoming more complicated in the region. Raising awareness about safe migration and strengthening the protection of migrants has become more urgent and important than ever.

This is the second training course after the first one organized by the Consular Department in collaboration with IOM in Da Nang in August 2023. The training course aims to carry out the plan to implement the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, according to Decision No. 402/QD-TTg dated March 20, 2020 of the Prime Minister.

At the June 25 training session, delegates were updated on the international migration situation in the world, the migration situation of Vietnamese citizens abroad, and an overview and orientation of the Vietnamese workers working abroad under contract; practice of investigating and handling cases of citizens being rescued from online scam facilities.

Delegates also discussed solutions to prevent and protect Vietnamese citizens from the increasing risk of luring into working at online scam centers abroad, and future directions to promote safe migration.

On June 26, the session focused on providing the domestic and Vietnamese legal framework on citizen protection, the implementation situation of citizen protection, and standard procedures of the Migrants in Countries in Crisis Guidelines.

At the event, delegates also discussed building and implementing an inter-sectoral coordination mechanism to protect the rights and interests of immigrant Vietnamese citizens, along with solutions to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination to Protect Vietnamese citizens migrating abroad in the current situation in a timely and effective manner.

Presenting at the two training days were experts from the IOM Asia-Pacific Regional Office, IOM Vietnam, the Consular Department, and the Department of Overseas Labor, Office of Drug Crime Prevention and Control, Border Guard Command, Vietnamese Embassies in Myanmar, Philippines, Laos, Vietnamese Consulate General in Battambang (Cambodia), as well as Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei (China).
