Italy 1-0 Wales: Pessina scores Azzurri winner but both teams into last 16
Matteo Pessina scored the only goal as Italy beat Wales in Rome, but both teams could celebrate safe passage through to the last 16, according to UEFA.
The eight changes made by Roberto Mancini looked to have done little to halt the Azzurri's momentum, with Andrea Belotti and Fedrico Chiesa both threatening to break the deadlock in the opening half-hour. Chris Gunter, without a goal in his 102 caps, went closest for Wales in the first half when he headed on to the roof of the net.
Pessina did find a way through before the break, though, helping on Marco Verratti's free-kick with the cutest of side-footed glances which took the ball beyond Danny Ward's dive.
When Federico Bernardeschi struck a post and Ethan Ampadu was shown a straight red card in the opening ten minutes of the second half, Wales's task looked to have morphed into one of damage limitation. They stood firm, however, and might even earned a point had captain Gareth Bale managed to control his back-post volley.
It mattered not, as Robert Page's side nevertheless go through as group runners-up, finishing ahead of Switzerland on goal difference.

Switzerland 3-1 Turkey: Shaqiri shines as Swiss close on last 16
Xherdan Shaqiri was at his effervescent best, scoring two fine goals to leave Switzerland in pole position to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
Turkey began brightly in Baku, but fell behind to Switzerland's first attack of the game on six minutes. There did not look to be much on as Haris Seferović took possession on the edge of the area with his back to goal, but the Benfica forward embraced his graceful side, pirouetting and drilling a low shot through Merih Demiral's legs and just inside the far post.
As reported by UEFA, Turkey's hopes were already fading fast. On 26 minutes they all but vanished as Shaqiri, scorer of the best goal of EURO 2016, thumped in from long range to add another pearl to his collection. It was clinical stuff from Switzerland, who had Yann Sommer to thank for maintaining their advantage with a string of saves as the Crescent-Stars peppered his goal.
Uğurcan Çakır pulled off some brilliance of his own, notably denying Shaqiri in a one-on-one, and just for a moment that looked like it could prove important as İrfan Can Kahveci's fine strike made it 2-1. Ultimately, though, Shaqiri had the last word, giving Steven Zuber a hat-trick of assists as he fired in the wide man's cross.
Granit Xhaka hit the post with a free-kick as Switzerland sought more goals to overhaul Wales for second but instead they must now wait to see if they are confirmed as one of the best third-placed teams.

How to watch Euro 2021 UEFA from anywhereThe Euro 2021 UEFA is one of the hottest events of the year, and I was disappointed to realize that I can’t watch it where I am. After testing and trying all the methods I could think of, I finally found a way to stream it for free on BBC iPlayer. According to VPN Mentor, you can use a VPN to watch the Euro 2021 UEFA from anywhere. The moment you connect to a UK server, your virtual footprint is moved there. This way, streaming services like BBC iPlayer believe you’re in a licensed region and immediately unblock their libraries. I tested 30+ services, but my top recommendation is ExpressVPN. It has a large selection of UK servers and offers superfast speeds, so you don’t lose any action. Best of all, you can try it out risk-free before you make a long-term commitment. If you don’t like it, you can request a refund within 30 days. |
