Ha Tinh Launches Sea and Islands Week

The Sea and Islands Week is being held in the central province of Ha Tinh with a range of activities.

A beach clean-ups event with the theme "Youth taking action for a plastic-free ocean" was launched in response to 2024 Vietnam Sea and Islands Week and World Oceans Day on May 19, at Thien Cam beach, Thien Cam town, Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province.

The aim of the week is to raise people’s awareness about the important role of the sea and islands in national construction and defence, and highlight the value of the ocean to human life.

A campaign to clean the beach was also launched with the participation of over 250 volunteers.

Speaking at the program, Phan Quoc Huy, Secretary of the Youth Union of the Vietnam Department of Seas and Islands, emphasized the important role of the residential community and fishermen in protecting the environment and preserving marine life, sustainable economic development, and working together to reduce plastic waste in the ocean.

The organizing committee hopes that through the "Beach Cleaning" activity in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2024, it will be a driving force to encourage fishermen and residential communities to actively collect waste, especially plastic waste. Thereby, gradually educating environmentally friendly living habits and protecting the marine environment.

Launching beach clean-ups event and holding a trash-for-plant exchange day, Huy emphasized that solving plastic pollution will be a long-term process and needs to mobilize more effective participation from the entire society, business community and international organizations to solve the problem of plastic waste pollution, turn plastic challenges into opportunities on the basis of developing circular economy, knowledge economy applying high technology, thereby contributing to global common efforts.

At the launching ceremony, more than 250 union members, young people and forces came out to clean 3 km coastal line. This is also a meaningful activity will be launched by the Youth Union of the Vietnam Department of Seas and Islands to coastal provinces throughout the country in the near future.
