A total of around 11,000 athletes from 206 countries are expected to participate in 33 sports in Tokyo Olympics 2021. India will be sending a large contingent for the Olympics but with a reduced number of officials to be in line with the Covid-19 protocols.

Where & When are the 2020 Olympics being held?

Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to begin on July 23 after a year-long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than canceled. The opening ceremony for Tokyo 2020 will start from 8 pm local time or 4:30 pm Indian Standard Time.

The opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics 2021 will take place on July 23 at the newly-built National Stadium in the Japanese capital while the closing ceremony will be held on August 8, 2021, at the same venue, according to Business Standard.

Sony Sports Network has won the rights for live broadcast of the Tokyo Olympics in India. Sony TEN 1 HD/SD, Sony TEN 2 HD/SD will live broadcast the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics with English Commentary while Hindi Commentary will be available on Sony TEN 3 HD/SD.

Live action of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 starts 23rd July to 8th August 2021 on SONY SIX, SONY TEN 1, SONY TEN 2, SONY TEN 3 AND SONY TEN 4 channels, according to Inside Sports.

Doordarshan

Doordarshan is an Indian public service broadcaster funded by the Government of India, owned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and one of Prasar Bharati's two divisions.

Doordarshan Sports will also live telecast all the events, including the opening ceremony, at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 on the terrestrial network and Direct-To-Home (DTH) platform, according to Sports Keeda.

Indian Team at 2020 Olympics

The number of Indian athletes participating in the Summer Olympic Games has seen a rise in each of its past three editions and all signs point to the finest athletes continuing that trend for India at Tokyo 2020. A total of 117 athletes had been a part of Rio 2016, where India returned with two medals.

India will be sending a 228-strong contingent (including the officials) to the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association president Narinder Batra had said in an interaction on Tuesday, 13 July. Out of the 119 athletes, 67 are male and 52 are female participants, according to Scoll.

The oldest among the lot will be the 45-year-old Mairaj Ahmed Khan (men’s skeet shooting). There are two other athletes in their 40s in Tejaswini Sawant and Sanjeev Rajput (both 40, rifle 3-positions) with table tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal following suit at 39. Rifle shooter Divyansh Singh Panwar is the youngest among the 119 at 18, while the contingent has six 19-year-olds, including pistol shooters Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker.
