A warehouse near a harbor in the capital of Beirut exploded into a giant smoke cloud, then an orange fireball and a huge mushroom cloud in the sky. The unexpected incident took place all of a complete sudden on August 4.

Lebanese military helicopters have been dispatched to the explosion scene to help to distinguish the fire.

The explosion is as powerful as a 3.5-magnitude earthquake, according to the German geoscience center GFZ, and could even be heard and felt in Cyprus, a nation more than 200 km across the Mediterranean shore.

Much of the Beirut port is flattened, the surrounding buildings are destroyed, with broken pieces of glasses flung out for miles. The city's only international airport also bears the brunt of the massive explosion.

Firefighters try to control the fire. 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer stored in the warehouse supposedly caused the disaster. Those fertilizers were the batch that was confiscated from a cargo ship in 2014.

The explosion even rocks the city that has been suffering 15 years of civil war, suicide bombings, Israeli bombings, and political assassinations.

Charbel Haj, who works near the port, said there were only small explosions like fireworks at first, after which he was suddenly thrown many meters away because of the big explosion.

People fled the scene. For hours after the biggest explosion in Lebanese history, ambulances from across the country were mobilized constantly to bring the victims to the hospital.

Some wounded people are evacuated by military vehicles.

Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan announces the death toll has reached 78 and nearly 4,000 are injured.

The area is devastated by the fire

Many countries around the world have sent their condolences to Lebanon. Even Israel, a rival of Lebanon, offered to send aid.

Donald Trump has said the deadly explosion in Beirut “looks like a terrible attack”, contradicting the information coming from Lebanese officials. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was ready to support Lebanon.
