International Students Embrace Tet Spirit
International students studying in Vietnam have the opportunity to experience the unique culture of Vietnamese people, including the traditional Lunar New Year. This is also an opportunity for Vietnamese universities to promote Vietnam's good cultural values to international friends through academic and cultural exchange programs.
Various volunteer activities to welcome Spring 2023 are organized by universities. |
Lotus University (HSU) together with many other universities across Vietnam have coordinated to organize an event called "Together with HSU - Bringing Tet home". More than 10,000 gifts have been sent to domestic students, international students, and their parents.
HSU Board of Directors fully understands the feeling of homesickness of international students when they have to live away from their families. That's even more true at the end of the year. These students have to learn to get used to the new way of life and culture in a foreign country. In order to motivate these international students, the HSU Board of Directors has brought interesting surprises for them.
Having completed the final exam of the semester, the group of friends Léa Malfatti, Clara Dualé, and Emilie Da Cunha (France) just walked out the door of the exam room when they were surprised to see the two Deans of the Faculty. They were waiting to hand out New Year gifts for this group of students.
International students were given a surprise gift by the school right after the semester exam was over. |
“I was surprised and touched by the school's love for me. I will bring this special gift back to France to give to my family,” shared Léa Malfatti, an international student.
Tournier Romain, an international student from France, could not hide his joy when he received the school's Tet gift. “I am very happy to receive a surprise gift from the school. Happy New Year"
A student from Finland happily took a selfie with a Tet gift given by her school. |
As for Chen Hsun-Hsien, a Taiwanese student, being able to celebrate the New Year and the Lunar New Year in Vietnam gives him familiar yet strange emotions.
“The Lunar New Year in Taiwan and Vietnam have many similarities. I feel close and familiar like at home when I study here and have the opportunity to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year”, Chen Hsun-Hsien said.
Tet is one of the most important traditional festivals of the year in Vietnamese culture. This is an opportunity for everyone to look back on the past year and hope for good luck in the new year.
Many activities have been implemented by the schools to enhance the understanding of the traditional cultural values of Vietnam for international students. |
According to statistics from the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Education and Training), Vietnam has received and trained more than 45,000 foreign students from 102 countries and territories in the 2016-2021 period. On average, every year, from 4,000 to over 6,000 new international students are admitted to Vietnam (in 2019 the largest number was over 6,300). Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam only accepts about 3,000 international students per year in 2020 and 2021.
