Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang on July 22 affirmed that the Vietnamese Government always ensures medical care and health safety of foreign nationals in the country, including citizens of the Republic of Korea (RoK), especially amidst complex developments of Covid-19.

Hang responded to queries regarding the death of a Korean Covid-19 patient in Ho Chi Minh City, at a press conference held by the foreign ministry.

According to the municipal Department of Foreign Affairs, the patient died of the pandemic at Cho Ray Hospital on July 13.

We are really sorry and would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family,” Hang was cited by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) as saying.

The patient had been treated at one of the most leading medical facilities in Vietnam and received the wholehearted care of the local medical staff in the best possible conditions, she said.

According to the spokeswoman, Vietnam's competent agencies have been working with the Korean side to deal with post-death procedures.

Vietnamese agencies and localities will review related protocols and work closely with foreign representative offices in the country to address emerging issues in a timely manner, and avoid the repetition of similar incidents in the future, Hang said.

Hanoi Times reported that the HCM City Department of Foreign Affairs had sent a diplomatic note to the Korean Consulate General in the city and a letter to the bereaved family, and informed relevant agencies.

Earlier, the Korean Consulate General said the man was quarantined after he was tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in early July.

The Korea Times said, the man, in his 50s, had lived in HCM City alone, while his family remained in the RoK.

HCM City is leading in the number of infections, with 48,863 cases. The southern metropolis reported 3,302 new patients on July 23 morning.

Local authorities said they will tighten its coronavirus restrictions in the next two weeks, ramping them up in certain areas by banning people from leaving their homes.

Two weeks under the social distancing order as dictated by Directive 16, which requires people to stay home unless to buy food, medications and other emergencies, infections in the city remain rampant especially in quarantine zones and locked down areas.

As the number of cases increases, so does the burden on the healthcare system, stretching medical workers, equipment and infrastructure to the limit, the municipal Party Committee cited by VnExpress.
