Overseas Vietnamese Contribute Knowledge, Experience, Material Resources to Homeland

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang said that the Vietnamese community abroad currently has about six million people. They are living in more than 130 countries and territories, of which over 80% are developed countries.
The number of Vietnamese workers going abroad to work is about 130,000-150,000 people each year. They contribute financially and become a human resource for the country when they return with vocational skills and experience after being trained in a foreign environment.
According to statistics, by the end of 2022, overseas Vietnamese from 35 countries and territories invested in 385 FDI projects in 42/63 provinces and cities in Vietnam with a total registered capital of US$1.72 billion.
This contributed to promoting socio-economic development, creating jobs for local workers and increasing tax revenue for the state budget.
The amount of remittances sent home from 1993 (the first year of remittance statistics) to 2022 reached over US$190 billion, nearly equal to the disbursed FDI capital in the same period.
The number of Vietnamese people participating and holding important positions in international organizations also tends to increase.
This is an important premise, contributing to strengthening trust and deepening the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the people, political community, leaders of countries, and international organizations.
Secretary of Hai Phong City Party Committee Le Tien Chau said that the city currently has nearly 50,000 people residing in 56 countries and territories around the world.
The value of remittances in the period 2016-2020 reached US$1.61 billion, an increase of nearly 70% compared to the period 2011-2015.
In particular, in 2019, the amount of remittances sent reached US$409 million (about VND9,000 billion), equivalent to 1/3 of the city's total domestic revenue budget in the same year.
In the period 2021-2022, although there has been a huge impact from the Covid-19 pandemic, the value of remittances sent to Hai Phong reached US$401 million, estimated to reach US$309 million in 2023.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said that in the context of the world's economic and political situation continuing to develop complicatedly, under the wise and timely leadership of the Party and the drastic involvement of all levels and sectors, localities, solidarity and efforts of the nation, our country continues to achieve great achievements.
In recent years, despite facing many difficulties and pressures, the Vietnamese community abroad made efforts to overcome difficulties, seize opportunities and grow in both quantity and quality.
Not only contributing to the socio-economic development of the place where they live, overseas Vietnamese always look towards their homeland and contribute to the country in many different forms, from knowledge, management experience to material resources.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the conference's theme "Connecting overseas Vietnamese with localities and businesses" and discussions on green investment, human resource development, and supply chain development are consistent with the priorities of the Government.
These are also areas in which our overseas Vietnamese have international experience and understanding. They can advise authorities, have specific cooperation projects with localities and domestic businesses.
The Deputy Prime Minister hoped that the authorities will recognize the enthusiastic contributions of overseas Vietnamese to promote the resources of Vietnamese people abroad for the work of building a strong, prosperous, and prosperous Vietnam.
