Volunteer driver travels over 500 km to epicenter
Dang Minh Tri, a 24-year-old ambulance driver, has driven over 500 km all the way from the central province of Quang Binh to Bac Giang – a major Covid-19 hotspot in the north to join the battle.
Back in May when Bac Giang province was at the peak of the coronavirus resurgence and needed support, Tri decided to take a few days off from work to join the frontline force in the epicenter. On May 21 at 3 a.m., he drove the ambulance car, which he bought from his workplace to Bac Giang with a few belongings.
“I had asked for my parent's permission before going, but my girlfriend only knew of my whereabouts by the time I reached Bac Giang,” Tri told Tien Phong.

At Bac Giang, Tri volunteered to deliver medical supplies and samples from affiliated districts to medical facilities for coronavirus testing. There’s no fixed working time for him, there were days he traveled from places to places from dawn to midnight.
“I only felt how stressful the Covid-19 pandemic was when I arrived in Bac Giang. The dedication of the doctors and nurses here really impressed me. They worked overnight without spare time for family,” Tri said. “Local people sent me thanks and encouragement, which was really moving. I’ll go home when the pandemic in Bac Giang is contained.”
“Tri said he wanted to join the Covid-19 fights in Bac Giang. I myself very touched by his voluntary spirit,” Nguyen Xuan Tinh, chief of office of the provincial Department of Health, shared. He said local authorities had arranged accommodations for Tri and other volunteers so that they could have peace of mind as they conducted missions at the frontline.
Generous donor, enthusiastic volunteer
Nguyen Vu Trung Hieu, 41, from Da Lat signed up to join the volunteer Covid-19 support team in Bac Giang after knowing the province was in shortage of human resources.

When local personnel established the second coronavirus field hospital, Hieu also volunteered to carry heavy things and set up patient beds until 2 a.m.
Hieu also donated VND 100 million (US$ 4,360) to help Bac Giang shoulder the pandemic.
“That was my savings. Bac Giang is grappling with the pandemic. It’s just a small contribution,” Hieu was quoted as saying. “I’ve taken part in charitable programs many times. What I did so far comes from my heart, there’s nothing to talk about.”
