UK's weather forecast

According to Express, the UK is in for a stormy weekend as weather maps show 60mph winds could hit northern parts of the country.

The UK has been battered by no less than five storms this year and this weekend, more windy conditions are on the agenda. According to weather maps from WXCHARTS maximum sustained winds could reach up to 60mph on Sunday, September 13 in northern areas of Britain.

The affected areas are northern parts of England and Scotland. The weather system is likely to bring heavy rain with it and the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for rain as a result.

The warning will come into effect on Saturday at 6 pm and flooding will be possible in affected areas.

The Met Office said: “Heavy and persistent rain is expected to develop over western Scotland during Saturday evening and continue through much of Sunday.”

The national weather agency added: “A band of heavy and persistent rain will arrive across western Scotland during Saturday evening, and continue through much of Sunday."

“Many places in the highlighted region will see 25 to 50mm of rainfall however, over the hills and mountains, peak totals of 120 to 160mm are likely during this time."

“In association with the rainfall, there will be a period of strong southwesterly winds, although these are not expected to be overly impactful, they may make travelling conditions more challenging in places."

The weather warning is due to end on Sunday at 11.59 pm. Regions affected are Central, Tayside and Fife, Highlands and Eilean Siar and Strathclyde. The weather comes as the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season continues to be “extremely active”.

Some storms that have hit the UK this year have been remnants of hurricanes from the US. The remnants of Hurricane Laura, which brought deadly winds to the US states of Louisiana and Texas last month, reached the UK days later and caused windy weather in Britain.

It's not all that uncommon for the remnants of US hurricanes to reach the UK, bringing turbulent weather.

However, by the time they reach the UK, the systems are nowhere near their original power. Currently, there are five weather systems churning in the Atlantic, two of them already tropical storms.

Tropical Storm Rene is currently located 800 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and according to the US’ National Hurricane Centre (NHC), the storm is becoming stronger.

Another tropical storm, Paulette, has meanwhile turned a little weaker but is expected to restrengthen in a couple of days.

The storm is currently moving at 10mph with maximum sustained winds at 50mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and Paulette is located 935 miles east northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands.

Paulette could become a hurricane by Sunday or Monday and the long-range forecast could see the storm head towards Britain. There are also three more systems yet to be named swirling in the Atlantic Ocean at the moment.

Outlook for next week

Britain will see temperatures soar back into heatwave conditions as a September Indian Summer hits the country from the end of this week. But heatwave weather is set to return from Monday as temperatures are expected to reach 30C again.

Jo Farrow, the Netweather forecaster, said: “There will be another surge of warmth, even heat for the start of next week as temperatures head back into the 20sC, even low 30sC possible around London.”

Before the Indian Summer scorches the UK, there will be a few days of dry and sunny weather in most parts of the country.

Alex Deakin, Met Office Meteorologist, said: “Lots going on with the weather over the next several days. Yes, a warm spell is on the way and also the weekend some heavy rain in places as well.”

On Friday there will be a dramatic divide between the North and South of the UK’s weather. Mr. Deakin said: “For Friday though it’s more of a classic North-South split.

“Now the weather is no respecter of borders but generally speaking across Scotland and Northern Ireland that’s where we’ll see gusty conditions and a spell of rain moving its way slowly southwards.”

He added: “But for most of England and Wales much of Friday will be dry and fine with some cloud but also some sunshine around as well.” For most of southern Britain, Friday will be a dry and sunny day.

Mr Deakin said: “Although there will be a fair bit of cloud at times much of England and Wales will be dry and bright again with some sunny spells.”

A weather front will split the UK into two halves bringing temperatures to 20C for southern Britain. Mr Deakin added: “Either side of that weather front we should see some bright or sunny spells and temperatures will respond to a bit of sunshine 17C, 18C across Aberdeenshire.

“Further south widely in the high teens and again east Anglia in the southeast getting into the low 20sC.”

Over the weekend, warm air will begin to spread over the UK gradually. From Monday, temperatures will skyrocket bringing a heatwave due to southerly breezes. Britons can prepare to get their barbecues back out for an Indian Summer blast. The tropical plume will cause scorching 30C and higher temperatures.

Ms Farrow said: “By Monday the frontal bands should have shifted northwards, moving the rain and a southerly breeze takes over as the warmth builds. Monday and Tuesday should be very warm with temperatures throughout the UK lifting, 31C is possible.”

Weather forecasters are predicting the heat to come back to the UK with a “vengeance”.

Jim Dale, British Weather Services Meteorologist, said: “Just as people were putting away the barbecues and sun creams, it’s time to get them back out again. Early next week we are likely to see temperatures lift into the 30s across parts of Britain as heat arrives with a vengeance.”

Europe's weather forecast

BBC WEATHER forecast a much more pleasant week for many parts of Europe as temperatures begin to rise again and thunderstorms disappear from the continent.

There will be a taste of late summer warmth across much of Europe on the way for the next few days, BBC meteorologist Sarah Keith-Lucas has revealed. She noted that temperatures are going to be on the rise for many central and western parts. There'll be some sunshine around but Europe will also have some low pressure weather systems.

Ms Keith-Lucas told viewers: "One in the central Mediterranean is going to be bringing heavy showers, some thunderstorms and some gusty winds to Sardinia and Corsica."

"This will push in towards the southeast of France as well through Friday. Another area of low pressure moving into northern parts of Europe will bring wet and windy conditions in northern parts of the UK and Scandinavia."

"Meanwhile it is warm and dry for much of Turkey, in across Greece and up towards Croatia as well."

She continued: "Lots of warm, sunny weather will be on the cards here. Then we're into those heavy showers across some northern parts of Italy, towards Corsica and Sardinia."

"To the north of that, it will be largely dry for much of Germany. But wetter and windy weather will push across parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland as well."

The weather presenter added: "Southern parts of the UK should remain warm and dry. We've got some rain heading to northern parts of the UK. But it's warming up for Spain, France and towards Germany into the low 30s."

Ms Keith-Lucas said: "There'll be largely dry, settled weather around these areas."

"And those showers in the Mediterranean will slowly ease away from Sardinia and Corsica, as well into the weekend. London will be warming up, as will Paris, but there could be some showers developing here as we head into the first part of next week."

"Showers will be possible in Madrid at times by Monday. Rome is looking at dry and warm with lots of sunshine also for Berlin. There will be a few heavy showers at times for Moscow."

Fair again in Spain and Portugal on Friday. Showers affecting the Balearics with some heavy thunderstorms in Corsica and Sardinia. Heavier showers in northern Italy, but drier to the south. Greece and Turkey will be dry with good spells of sunshine and feeling warm as well.
