The event drew nearly 300 delegates representing around 8,000 Vietnamese who used to study and work in Bulgaria.

Speaking at the event, Vice President of the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations (HAUFO) Tran Thi Phuong said the move holds significance at a time when the two nations mark the 70th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (February 8, 1950-2020).

She wished that the chapter would build on its past achievements and contribute to socio-economic development and external relations of the city in the future.

For his part, First Secretary of the Bulgarian Embassy in Vietnam Blagov Prodanov expressed his belief that the congress would discuss opportunities to further deepen Vietnam – Bulgaria ties with specific initiatives.

During the tenure, the chapter will regularly consolidate its executive board, expand operations and boost ties with the VBFA, the Bulgarian Embassy, businesses and community in Hanoi.

It will also popularise Vietnam, its history, culture and achievements, thereby fostering traditional friendship between the two countries' people, and the two capital cities.

The congress elected a 27-member executive board led by former Political Commissar of Military Hospital 108 Le Thu Ha.

Bulgaria was one of the first ten countries in the world officially establishing diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

The bilateral relations have been strengthened across fields from politics – diplomacy, economics-trade, defence – security, science – technology, education – training, to culture, sports and tourism.

Last month, the Central Vietnam-Bulgaria Friendship Association (VBFA) under the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) in coordination with the Embassy of Bulgaria held a ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the association to postpone several major events, however, on the occassion, the VBFA still has presented a number of prizes to those who sent their writings and photos to compile the book “Bulgaria memory” – the publication reflects diplomatic activities between the two nations, as well as the deep, sincere feelings and gratitude to Bulgaria of Vietnamese people who have worked, studied and lived in the European country.

On the occasion of the Bulgarian Education, Culture and Slavonic Literature Day (May 24), the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) and the city's Vietnam – Bulgaria Friendship Association presented to Bulgarian Ambassador to Vietnam Marinela Petkova VND 100 million (USD 4.299) in order to help the country effectively deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the event, HUFO Chairman Vuong Duc Hoang Quan and Bulgarian Ambassador to Vietnam Marinela Petkova also co-chaired a seminar on Vietnam – Bulgaria educational cooperation in the new period, and looked into measures to further improve the efficiency of scholarships provided by the Bulgarian Government for Vietnam./.
