Vietnamese and Cambodian officials exchanged border topographic maps at 1:25,000 scale atMoc Bai international border gate on August 1.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Le Hoai Trung, Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Vietnam – Cambodia Joint Committee on Border Demarcation and Marker Planting, while the Cambodian delegation was headed by Var Kim Hong, Senior Minister in charge of border affairs and Chairman of the Cambodia – Vietnam Joint Committee on Border Demarcation and Marker Planting.

The two sides examined and agreed all 500 sets of border topographic maps, including 250 sets in Vietnamese - Khmer languages and 250 others in Khmer - Vietnamese languages with all signatures of the two countries' relevant authorities. Each side keeps 250 sets of original maps.

The maps are part of the
Vietnam – Cambodia land border demarcation protocol signed on October 5, 2019 along with the supplementary treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty.

The event laid an important foundation for both sides to hold a ceremony to exchange the document approving the validity of the supplementary treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty, and the Vietnam – Cambodia land border demarcation protocol.

Both sides agreed to inform each other about schedule for the ceremony via diplomatic channels after the two Governments end measures to prevent the spread of
COVID-19.

About one million passengers pass through border gates between Tay Ninh and Cambodian provinces each year.

The common Vietnam-Cambodia land borderline is approximately 1,245 km long, running through 10 Vietnamese provinces and 9 Cambodian localities.

Both nations have been carrying out boundary delimitation and border marker planting work since early 1986 under signed agreements.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the importance of the two freshly- signed documents as well as already signed border agreements as a legal foundation to promote a borderline of peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development.

“The signing ceremony today is a strong declaration of both countries to the world about their commitment to building a borderline of peace, friendship, cooperation and development on the basis of mutual respect of each other’s territorial integrity and benefits for both peoples’ prosperity and happiness,” said the Vietnamese Government leader at the conference in Hanoi in 2019 to review land border marker planting work since 2006 and signed a number of important related documents.

PM Hunsen hailed progress in border issue settlement as a result of the combined efforts and great friendship.

“That is the outcome of the efforts of the Vietnamese Prime Minister and me, along with the Vietnam-Cambodia joint border committee and administrations at all levels of the two countries over the past 14 years, since the signing of the supplementary treaty in 2005,” he said.

The Cambodian PM stated that his nation is taking heed to the construction of infrastructure, roads, markets and production facilities in border areas, thereby benefiting residents of both nations and contributing to stronger cooperation and development among Greater Mekong Sub-region countries and ASEAN member states./.
