PM: Vietnam not allowed to ease guard against COVID-19

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked ministries, agencies, localities, units, and individuals to remain vigilant against COVID-19 and raise the sense of responsibility for public health. He made the request during a Cabinet meeting on COVID-19 prevention and control on April 26 morning, which was held amid the complex developments of the pandemic in the world.

According to a document on the meeting outcomes, issued by the Government Office, the PM pointed out the high risk of pandemic resurgence in Vietnam as its neighboring countries are facing spikes in cases. The leader urged ministries, agencies, and localities to get updated on the COVID-19 situation at home and in foreign countries, and seriously implement prevention and control measures. He reiterated the need to follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message. Any violations should be strictly punished in line with regulations of the Party and law of the State, the PM noted.

The Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Public Security, provincial-level People’s Committees, and relevant ministries and agencies need to step up inspections over the observance of quarantine regulations, he continued. Northwestern border provinces should coordinate with the Ministries of National Defence and Public Security, and closely cooperate with neighboring countries in controlling immigration via roads and sea routes. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health should enhance international cooperation to expand the access to COVID-19 vaccines and quick testing techniques, while facilitating vaccine production at home, the PM said.

Japan-funded project to help mitigate COVID-19 impacts on vulnerable populations

The Japanese Government will provide Vietnam with more than 2.8 million USD to finance a project on “Mitigating COVID-19 Impacts on Vulnerable Populations”, which was launched in Hanoi on April 26. The project aims to aid the Vietnamese Government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations and ensure national progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project will be conducted from April 2021 to March 2022 in 14 cities and provinces: Thai Nguyen, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Da Nang, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Dak Lak, An Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, and HCM City.

Though Vietnam responded to COVID-19 better than most countries, the social and economic consequences it has caused are of great concern, the ambassador went on, and vulnerable groups such as women and girls, the elderly, and adolescents have been hit hardest. For Vietnam to achieve the SDGs, it is necessary to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and ensure that all people are part of the sustainable development process so that no one is left behind. She expects the project will represent a great leap forward for Vietnam in remaining committed to fulfilling the SDGs.

Under the project, about 1,000 elderly citizens in selected cities and provinces will be provided with high-quality health care and support services, while some 58,000 others are expected to benefit from telehealth services. About 5,000 ethnic minority women will benefit from a mobile application offering information and consultation on sexual and reproductive healthcare, while 45 district-level public clinics will receive medical equipment to protect their health workers from COVID-19.

Rice aid comes for Vietnamese-Cambodians under COVID-19 lockdown

The first rice packages to help Vietnamese-Cambodian families living in areas under lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 arrived in Preah Sihanouk city of the province of the same name on April 25. The Cambodian province has been put under lockdown since April 23 in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

President of the Khmer-Vietnam association in Preah Sihanouk Tran Van Nam earlier informed the Vietnamese Consulate General in the Cambodian province that many Vietnamese-Cambodians in Tumnup Rolok are facing food shortages. The residential area has been under quarantine for nearly one month since late March. With support from relevant agencies in Cambodia, the Consulate General delivered the rice aid to 50 disadvantaged families in Tumnup Rolok on April 25. Beneficiaries were asked to follow health guidelines when receiving the aid.

Preah Sihanouk authorities and its Red Cross Society will soon distribute food free of charge to all residents in lockdown areas, Vietnamese General Consul Vu Ngoc Ly said. There are no reports on Vietnamese-Cambodians contracted with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in Preah Sihanouk, according to the Consulate General.
