Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh proposes solutions to realize universal Covid-19 vaccination

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh made important proposals for the international community to achieve the goal of universal Covid-19 vaccination in his speech sent to the High-level thematic debate entitled “Galvanizing momentum for universal vaccination" of the UN General Assembly on February 5.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM emphasized the need to promote global-scale solutions, uphold international solidarity and cooperation; increase vaccine supply and help developing countries improve the capacity of grassroots and preventive medicine systems; and strengthen cooperation in vaccine production and transfer of vaccine production technology to developing countries.

He welcomed the recent announcement of the World Health Organisation (WHO), that a number of developing countries, including Vietnam, were selected to receive mRNA vaccine technology transfer, saying that Vietnam will take advantage of this cooperation opportunity to contribute to international efforts to promote universal vaccination.

Deputy PM Minh highlighted the significance of vaccination in the fight against the pandemic, saying that with the motto of putting the health of the people first, Vietnam has conducted the largest vaccination campaign in history.

More than 190 million doses of vaccines have been administered to 97 percent of people aged 18 and above, and nearly 90 percent of children aged over 12 years in Vietnam, he said, adding that the country has been making necessary preparations to vaccine children aged 5-11.

The large-scale vaccination roll-out has helped Vietnam minimize the impact of the pandemic, allowed the country to re-open society and the economy in a safe, flexible, and effective manner, and promote a recovery based on green and digital transformation, he noted.

He took the occasion to thank friends and partners around the world for providing vaccines, medical equipment, and supplies to support Vietnam through the COVAX Facility and bilateral channels.

The UN General Assembly’s high-level meeting was held in the context that the pandemic continues to cause negative health, economic and social impacts around the world. It aims to look into existing opportunities and challenges in producing and distributing vaccines on a global scale, and promote political commitments of the international community to achieve universal vaccination as soon as possible.

Comprehensive measures rolled out to ensure children's safety against Covid-19 at school

With the Ministry of Health's guidance, the Ministry of Education and Training and localities have made plans, scenarios, roadmaps, implemented rehearsals, and prepared necessary conditions to get children back to school safely, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son told the National Assembly deputies on February 25.

The minister underlined that bringing children back to school is a must and an obvious trend. Localities can flexibly adjust the time of concluding the 2021-2022 academic year.

As part of efforts to adapt to the situation, right before the Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival, 55 out of 63 localities nationwide had plans allowing pre-school children to return to school, while 57 allowed primary students back to school and 59 allowed high schools to resumed in-person classes.

Grassroots reports showed that only 18 percent of students were infected with Covid-19 at schools, and the majority contracted the virus at home, he said, stressing that allowing children to return to school is a proper policy.

As of February 25, a total of 99% of people above 18 years old had received at least one Covid-19 vaccine shot, while 98% had been given two doses, and 32% have had three. Meanwhile, 99% of children aged 12 to 17 have got at least one dose and 94% had two.

So far, the nation has injected roughly 193 million out of 213 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines it has received, according to Deputy Health Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen.
