Vietnam Covid-19 Updates (May 21): Vietnam confirms 2 new death

113 new cases, 38th and 39th death confirmed
89 new cases were reported on May 20, including five imported cases that had been quarantined upon their arrival, and 84 cases in quarantine facilities or locked-down areas, the Ministry of Health said. 24 local Covid-19 patients were confirmed on Friday morning, raising Vietnam's infection tally in its new Covid wave to 1,786. The new cases were recorded in four northern provinces of Bac Giang, Dien Bien, Hai Duong, and Bac Ninh.
According to the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control's Treatment Sub-committee, Vietnam's 38th death related to Covid-19 is a 64-year-old female admitted patient to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases on May 4 with the diagnosis of blood infection, liver cancer, chronic hepatitis B, and hemophagocytic syndrome. On May 19, she died of septic shock from liver cancer, chronic hepatitis B, hemophagocytic syndrome, leukopenia, and Covid-19 infection.
The 39th case is a patient receiving treatment at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. He tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on May 11 and had since received intensive care, including mechanical ventilation, dialysis, and antibiotics. However, the patient turned critical on May 19 and died in the evening. He died of COVID-19 and underlying illnesses.

Vietnam moves to establish COVID-19 vaccine fund
Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai has approved the plan of using financial resources raised by the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) for COVID-19 prevention and control to buy COVID-19 vaccines.
Print Dispatch No. 3295/VPCP-KTTH, the Deputy PM asked the VFF to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to implement the plan, while instructing chapters in cities and its provinces to collaborate with local Departments of Finance to transfer all the received donations to the State budget for COVID-19 vaccine purchasing.
The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Defense were requested to make a balance on the allocated resources and bear the responsibility for reviewing the implementation of the scheme in line with the law related to the State budget, thus avoiding the overlapping of beneficiaries. Deputy PM Khai is also underlined the need to allocate, manage, use and balance the resources in an open, transparent, economical, and effective manner to the right groups of beneficiaries.

Provinces strengthen pandemic preventions
Thanh Hoa: From May 20, people returning to Thanh Hoa from Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City must make a medical declaration, take samples for testing and isolate at home for at least 14 days. All people returning from other provinces (even without going through pandemic areas) must self-monitor their health for at least 5 days and notify the local health authority if they find any symptoms that might be Covid-19.
Hai Duong: Hai Duong leaders asked people in the city to stay at home, only going out when absolutely necessary. Hai Duong citizens are asked to stay home from 10pm to 5am. People with symptoms such as cough, fever, shortness of breath must contact the health facilities for instructions on testing and treatment.
Quang Ninh: Quang Ninh People's Committee said that from May 20, forces serving at isolation facilities were required to periodically test for Covid-19. The cost of testing shall be covered by district committees' budget. From May 15 to 19, Quang Ninh supported Bac Giang to test more than 30,000 samples to detect SARS-CoV-2 infections.
The latest cases brought the national count of domestic infections to 3,355. A total of 1,785 cases have been detected since the fourth wave of the pandemic hit the country on April 27. As many as 129,502 people who came into close contact with COVID-19 patients or entered Vietnam from pandemic-hit areas are now under medical monitoring quality. The number of recoveries and deaths remains at 2,689 and 39, respectively. Among the patients under treatment, 63 have tested negative for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 once, 34 twice, and 23 thrice. On May 20, 4,897 more people were vaccinated. As of 4 pm on the day, more than 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been injected in the nation. |
