Vietnam Embassy to the US advocates against hate crime on Asians

Vietnamese Embassy has sent a letter requesting the US government to continue dealing with discrimination against Asians, including ensuring security, the right to access health services, education, and jobs.

According to Vietnam News Agency reporters in the USA, in the context that discrimination against Asians, including Vietnamese American and Vietnamese citizens living in the US, as well as the pandemic, are ranging, Vietnam Embassy to the US has many times exchanged and advocated US Government, Congress, States to ensure security, safety and the rights to access to healthcare, education, employment service for Vietnamese citizens and community living in the US.

Speaking with the US National Security Council, the Department of State, and other congressional committees, the Vietnamese side raised concerns about the current situation of the Vietnamese American and Vietnamese citizens in the US who have been subject to some form of discrimination, stigma, and even violence related to the COVID-19 pandemic origin. Some Vietnamese businesses were robbed, Vietnamese people had difficulty in accessing public jobs and services. Some even got assaulted and attacked in public places recently.

The Vietnamese diplomatic mission always emphasizes the active contribution of the Vietnamese community to the host country, especially the dedication of many Vietnamese on the front lines to ensure the health, security, and well-being of people across the US during this pandemic.

Last March 31, Vietnam Ambassador to the US Ha Kim Ngoc and Ambassador from other ASEAN countries to the US sent a letter to the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the National Security Council to condemn acts of discrimination and racism against Asian Americans in the US. The letter also suggested that the US government continue measures to address discrimination against Asians, including ensuring security, access to health services, education, employment, security, and social services.

At the same time, the Embassy of Vietnam sent a letter to the US Congressmen, including Senator Patrick Leahy - President pro tempore of the United States Senate; Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation; Rep. Stephanie Murphy - the first Vietnamese female congressman of the US to suggest that congressmen raise their voice to end discrimination against Vietnamese citizens and community in the US.

These US agencies have acknowledged the opinions of Vietnamese and ASEAN countries' diplomatic missions in Washington, DC, pledging to continue to support and ensure the interests of the Asians in the US.

Along with the efforts of local mobilization, the Embassy of Vietnam to the US continuously maintains information channels and a 24/7 hotline to support and monitor the situation, promptly protect the Vietnamese community.

Previously, US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have strongly condemned hatred and violence against Asian Americans in the US. Senator Patrick Leahy and Ami Bera spoke publicly on Twitter to protest the discrimination against Asians. On March 27, Rep. Stephanie Murphy wrote in the Washington Post condemning acts of discrimination against Asians and expressed support for the Washington administration to strengthen measures to protect Asian communities in the United States.
