Bui Van Nghiem assigned as Secretary of Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee
Bui Van Nghiem, member of the Party Central Committee (PCC) and permanent Vice Secretary of the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee has been assigned as Secretary of Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee for the 2020-2025 tenure.
Deputy Head of the PCC’s Commission for Organisation Hoang Dang Quang handed over the Politburo’s decision on the assignment at a conference held in Vinh Long province on May 7.
Addressing the event, Hoang Dang Quang suggested that as the new Secretary of Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee, Bui Van Nghiem should always express a spirit of solidarity and determination to serve the Party and people so that the province will exceed the targets set at the resolution of the 11th provincial Party Congress and become an even more prosperous province.
The new Secretary expressed his sincere thanks to the PCC, the Politburo, and the Secretariat for assigning him this position ,both a great honour and also a heavy responsibility upon him.
He emphasised that the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee will always follow the leadership and direction of the PCC, the Politburo, and the Secretariat as well as support from central and local agencies, departments, organisations and people to fulfill all assigned tasks, as reported by NDO.
PM demands appropriate responses to COVID-19
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered subordinate levels to have appropriate responses to COVID-19 to achieve the dual goal of the pandemic containment and economic recovery.
The Government chief made the order at the national conference which was held in in-person and virtual format on May 7 with the participation of top leaders of provinces and cities.
Pham pointed out that the recent resurgence of local transmissions partly came as a result of negligence, subjectivity and lack of vigilance of several local authorities.
He emphasized the need to keep mind cool and calm in evaluating the pandemic situation and choosing suitable response options.

Social distancing shall only be imposed in the direction of minimizing adverse socio-economic impacts and supply chain disruptions, PM Pham said.
Localities must seriously implement the existing regulations on mandatory quarantine (21 days) at designated facilities and post-quarantine medical surveillance at places of residence while proactively expanding their testing capacity to get ready for all scenarios.
PM Pham took the occasion to call for people’s support and cooperation in the fight against the pandemic by strictly implementing all regulations on COVID-19 prevention and control, VGP said.
Ho Chi Minh City supports Vientiane, Phnom Penh in COVID-19 control
Ho Chi Minh City has decided to provide assistance of US$500,000 each to the Lao capital city of Vientiane and Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh in their COVID-19 fight.
Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong handed over the assistance during an online working session with Vientiane’s Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone and Phnom Penh’s Governor Khuong Sreng on May 7.
Speaking at the working session, the Ho Chi Minh City leader emphasised the municipal authorities and people have always paid great attention to the difficulties that Vientiane and Phnom Penh have faced due to the new COVID-19 outbreaks.

He also reaffirmed that Ho Chi Minh City has always made a special effort to preserve and promote the good relations with Laos and Cambodia, especially with their two capital cities.
For his part, Vientiane’s Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone gave his sincere thanks for the support from Ho Chi Minh City in particular and Vietnam in general for COVID-19 prevention and control.
He noted that the close cooperation among Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia was a necessary factor for success in the fight against the pandemic, as well as an important premise for the three countries in terms of socio-economic development, according to NDO.
Vietnamese, Cuban Foreign Ministers hold phone talks
Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son held phone talks with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla on May 7 to discuss measures strengthening the special traditional friendship and comprehensive and trustful partnership between the two nations.
FM Son congratulated him on the success of the eighth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (CPC) from April 16-19 and in relation to the Cuban Foreign Minister’s re-election as a Politburo member.
He added that the two foreign ministries would continue working closely together to further tighten bilateral friendship and collaboration.
The Vietnamese minister reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of standing side by side with Cuba and strongly supporting the United Nations General Assembly’s resolutions requesting an end to the economic embargo.

Parrilla, for his part, thanked Vietnam for providing invaluable support for Cuba over the years and spoke highly of Vietnam’s role as the rotating President of the United Nations Security Council in January 2020 and April 2021.
Both sides agreed to deliver on the commitments reached by the two nations’ leaders, including those made during the phone talks on May 5 between Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and First Secretary of the CPC Miguel Diaz-Canel, facilitating high-level visits when conditions allow, maintaining all-level exchanges via phone and teleconference amid the COVID-19 pandemic, NDO reported.
Vietnam expects stronger defence ties with Cambodia
Minister of National Defence Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang expressed his hope that Vietnam and Cambodia will redouble efforts to further boost defence links, maintaining its role as a pillar of bilateral ties.

y 7, Giang emphasized that in any circumstance, the Vietnamese Party, State, and army always place great importance to the sound neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive cooperation with Cambodia.

The Cambodian minister, for his part, thanked Vietnam for its timely dispatch of experts and medical supplies to Cambodia. He congratulated Giang on his appointment as Minister of National Defence and expressed his belief that he will make a significant contribution to cooperation between the armies of the two countries.
The two ministers said that, amid COVID-19, the Vietnamese and Cambodian defence ministries have sought suitable and effective forms of cooperation, particularly in training, border protection, and mutual support in COVID-19 prevention and control, VOV said.
