On April 19, Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) attended the 44th meeting of the National Coordinator of the Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development, and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA).

Within the meeting's framework, RCA member states held a ceremony to transfer the president position to Vietnam and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the agreement.

Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien confirmed Vietnam would coordinate with other member countries to make the most of the IAEA's support in cooperation activities within RCA's framework.

The ambassador expressed his appreciation for the IAEA's statistics and research on the impacts of the RCA on the socio-economics of member countries, which was essential to raise awareness about the role of nuclear technology for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

In an exchange on the conference of the meeting, the IAEA leader said Vietnam played an important role in the development and application of nuclear technology, including cooperation activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

The agency hopes Vietnam, as RCA President for the 2022-2023 tenure, would continue to coordinate with the agency to promote RCA and cooperation to develop nuclear technology in the region.

The agency is highly appreciated Vietnam's contributions at the Conference of the Member States of the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (A/CPPMM), held from March 28 to April 1, 2022.

The IAEA hopes that Vietnam, with its new role, would closely coordinate with the IAEA and its member countries in administering nuclear safety and security and create favorable conditions for the development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien reiterated Vietnam's priority in joining the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2021-2023 tenure, including promoting the development and application of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, enhance nuclear safety and security. Vietnam commits to continue to coordinate with IAEA member countries in these processes.

The Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA) was first established in 1972 under the auspices of the IAEA to promote, coordinate and implement cooperative research, development and training projects in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology among the RCA parties.
