Representatives from the Vietnam Women Union (VWU) Central Committee have recently attended a meeting between Vietnamese brides and their parents, and an exchange of Vietnamese-Korean families in the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s CheongBuk province.

Under the event, in its 14th edition, relatives of nine Vietnamese brides were supported to come to the RoK in order to meet their daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Since 2008, it has benefited up to 140 families with more than 420 members.

A representative of CheongBuk said the province has launched diverse activities to support bilingual education for children from Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families, and hopes to bring the second generation of such families to Vietnam to learn about Vietnamese culture, strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

Luong Thi Thuy, from the VWU Central Committee, deputy head of the event’s organizing committee, thanked the Korean province’s authorities for their support in organizing the meeting and expressed her hope that the locality will hold more activities to help foreign brides, including Vietnamese, soon stabilize their lives, integrate into the host society, and contribute to local socio-economic development.

She also urged Vietnamese brides in the RoK to carry forward the good values ​​of Vietnamese women in the new era and raise a sense of responsibility for themselves, their families, and society.

Apart from the meeting, parents of the Vietnamese brides and the Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families visited local scenic spots.

According to Statistics Korea, the number of international marriages between a citizen of the RoK and a foreigner in 2018 rose 8.5% from a year earlier to 23,773, with Vietnamese brides taking the lion’s share.

International marriages accounted for 9.2% of total marriages of 258,000 in the country in 2018, up 0.9% against the previous year.

Out of the total, couples made up of a Korean man and a foreign woman accounted for 67% last year, followed by foreign male-Korean female pairs with 19.6% and couples from naturalized Koreans with 14.6%.

Vietnamese brides took the lion’s share of all international marriages at 30% in 2018. Chinese wives came in second with 21.6 percent, followed by Thai at 6.6%./.
