After nearly one year, Lenger Farm in Nam Dien commune, Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province becomes the first in Vietnam and the world to be granted the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certificate for its Meretrix Lyrata clams. This achievement has a special significance in promoting Vietnamese clams in the international market, thereby it can penetrate more markets.

The ASC certificate is an international standard for sustainable aquaculture established by WWF (World Wide Fund) and IDH (Sustainable Trade Initiative) in 2010. To date, the ASC certificate includes 8 sets of standards for 12 seafood species. As many as 700 farms in more than 40 countries have got the ASC certificate.

In order to seize opportunities as well as get access to larger markets, sustainable production and chain connectivity is always the top priority of seafood enterprises in Vietnam. According to statistics, each year, the seafood sector contributes more than 3% of the total gross domestic product (GDP). Vietnam's seafood products have been present in many countries and territories. Clam is one of the four key aquaculture products of Vietnam in general and Nam Dinh province in particular.

ASC certified clams are favored by customers in many countries, especially in Europe, the US, and Japan, said Deputy Director of ICAFIS Dinh Xuan Lap, adding that Japan will give a priority for ASC certified seafood at the 2020 Summer Olympics (slated to take place in 2021). This is considered a great opportunity to promote Vietnamese ASC certified clams.

As of 2019, the total area of clams and mollusks in Vietnam was estimated at 41,500ha, with a total output of nearly 310,000 tons. The export turnover in 2019 reached 93,642 million USD, of which clam export occupied 63.00 million USD. Clam raising has created jobs for about 200,000 laborers in Vietnam.
