A team of over 30 Vietnamese experts, headed by the country's deputy health minister, set off to Laos on Tuesday to aid the nation in its bid to control the spread of the coronavirus.

“We embark on this trip with a will to help Laos contain the novel pandemic,” Son said. The deputy minister has been playing an active role in Vietnam’s Covid-19 battle, directly visiting hotspots to suppress local surges, notably the outbreak in Da Nang City last August.

All 35 medical experts are from major hospitals in Vietnam. They are leading specialists in infectious diseases, intensive care, resuscitation and emergency, sanitation and epidemiology.

Under the leadership of the deputy health minister, the delegation will help Laos' frontline personnel in Savannakhet and Vientiane build field hospitals, as well as enhance intensive care and coronavirus testing capabilities.

At the online meeting with his counterpart Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, Vietnam Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long pledged to help Laos overcome the dire impact of Covid-19. On the same day, 200 ventilators, 2 million face masks, 10 tons of chloroquine and other anti-Covid equipment were handed over to Laos authorities. Long had also promised to help treat Laos' coronavirus patients remotely through a telemedicine system.

Laos has so far had nearly 1,000 Covid cases, but there has been a steady increase in recent weeks, peaking at 100 a day, putting a significant burden on the medical system.

Vietnam reported 19 new cases of Covid-19 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 3, according to the Health Ministry. Nine of the new cases were imported. The domestic cases included eight in Vinh Phuc and two in Ha Nam.

Four new cases found on the morning of May 4, of which 2 cases were isolated immediately after entry in An Giang, and two were recorded domestically in Da Nang and Hanoi.
