The Vietnamese community in Hungary donated more than HUF 6 million (nearly VND 420 million) to support families affected by the recent warehouse fire in Nyíregyháza city.

In a short period of time, about two weeks since the major fire broke out on August 13 in Nyíregyháza, which completely burned down the warehouses of seven Vietnamese families, the community has donated more than HUF 6 million (nearly VND 420 million) to support the families affected by the fire.

The fire caused huge material damage, estimated at nearly HUF 200 million (VND 13.7 billion).

Immediately after hearing about the fire, the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary sent representatives to visit the victims.

According to the embassy's announcement on August 17, the warehouses that were burned down all belonged to young couples who had just come to Hungary to start a business, and all their goods have now been burned down. The families affected by the fire all had young children, the youngest is only 2 years old, the oldest is 8.

To support and share some of the losses of the people, Ambassador Nguyen Thi Bich Thao and the Vietnamese Association in Hungary promptly sent a letter calling on associations, unions, clubs, countrymen associations, businesses and individuals to join hands to help and financially support the households affected by the fire to overcome difficulties, stabilize their lives soon, and take care of their young children.

A fundraising committee was quickly established. After more than two weeks of fundraising, the embassy, businesses, associations, unions and individuals in the Vietnamese community in Hungary have raised HUF 4,215,000 (nearly VND 290 million).

The Nghe Tinh and Yen Thanh Countrymen Associations also launched a contribution of HUF 1,860,000 (nearly VND 130 million), which was presented by the representatives of the two associations during their visit, meeting and encouraging the families of the victims in Nyíregyháza on September 5.

At noon on September 9, at the association's office in Budapest-based Thang Long Trade Center, representatives of the association's Executive Board and the fundraising committee presented an amount of money equivalent to nearly VND 290 million to representatives of seven families of the victims in the presence of a number of active members of the community.

Le Trong Ha, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Vietnam in Hungary and Nguyen Thanh Thuy, Counselor of the Embassy were also present at this donation ceremony.

Although the donation cannot be compared to the great losses that the families have suffered, Le Trong Ha stressed, the disaster shows more clearly the love, the spirit of mutual love, the good tradition of 'helping each other' of the Vietnamese community in times of trouble, especially when the majority of the countrymen have also encountered many difficulties in life and work in recent years.

Nyíregyháza city ais about 240km from the capital Budapest, where more than 10 families with about 50 Vietnamese people live and work.

Representatives of the families of the victims in the fire were moved to express their gratitude to the people, promising to try to overcome the difficulties, and although living far from Budapest - where the majority of Vietnamese people in Hungary live - the families also make efforts to participate in movements and activities of the community.
