The Hung Kings are commemorated each year on the 10th day of the third lunar month, which falls on April 2 this year, as an occasion for the nation to express gratitude to the ancestors.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, this year's Hung King Commenmoration Day, was commemorated simply with the participation of embassy’s officials only, but with full respect to the founders of the Vietnamese nation.

Overseas Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic also offered incense and offerings to express gratitude to the two for laying the foundations of the country.

The event, the sixth of its kind, set up by Phu Tho Fellow Countrymen Association in cooperation with the Embassy of Vietnam and Vietnamese People Association in the Czech Republic.

The Vietnamese community is now the third largest minority group in the Czech Republic.

Due to the developments of COVID-19 pandemic, the Vietnam Ancestral Global Day Project will organize an online celebration. The event will include a contest to write stories or make video clips to express patriotism, love for the motherland and experience of overseas Vietnamese supporting each other in misfortune.

All Vietnamese at homeland and abroad as well as foreigners are eligible to join the contest by posting their stories or videos on their Facebook walls and sharing them on the Fanpage “Vietnam Ancestral Global Day” from April 2 to May 31.

Legend was said that Lac Long Quan married Au Co, who later gave birth to a pouch filled with one hundred eggs, which soon hatched into a hundred sons, believed to be the ancestors of the Vietnamese nation. Their eldest son kinged himself, who named the country Van Lang and set up the capital in Phong Chau (nowadays Viet Tri city of Phu Tho province), beginning the era of the Hung Kings.

To honour their great contributions, a complex of temples dedicated to them was built on Nghia Linh Mountain in Phu Tho, and the 10th day of the third lunar month was designated as the national commemorative anniversary for the kings.

The worshipping rituals of the Hung Kings are closely related to the ancestral worshipping tradition of most Vietnamese families which forms an important part of people's spiritual lives. It was recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012./.
