Trump won't do next debate after it goes virtual

President Donald Trump said Thursday he would not take part in the next presidential debate with former Vice President Joe Biden after it was moved to a virtual format because of COVID-19 safety concerns, USA Today reported.

It would leave the president and Biden just one more debate before Election Day on Nov. 3.

Trump's decision set off a furious back and forth between the two campaigns on the debate schedule and formats, culminating with Biden scheduling his own televised town hall for Oct. 15, the night of the previously scheduled second of three debates. Trump won't be present.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Thursday morning the next debate would be remote to "protect the health and safety of all involved" after Trump's positive COVID-19 diagnosis and the subsequent White House outbreak.

"I'm not going to waste my time doing a virtual debate," Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, calling it a "joke" and an effort "to protect Biden."

A White House memo released Thursday night announced Trump had completed his course of therapy for COVID-19 "as prescribed by his team of physicians." White House physician Dr. Sean Conley cleared Trump to return to public life on Saturday, 10 days since his diagnosis, saying, "I fully anticipate the President's safe return to public engagements at that time"

In their third statement on the topic today, Trump Campaign Manager Bill Stepien cited the letter from Dr. Conley, insisting the second presidential debate should be held in person and there is no reason to "shift the debate to a virtual setting, postpone it, or otherwise alter it in any away"

White House officials and Trump's physician have not said when the president's last negative test was.

A fire spread through a high-rise apartment building in a South Korean port city early Friday, causing minor injuries to scores of people, officials said.

Footage from the scene in Ulsan showed a huge ball of orange flame soaring up the 33-floor building and shooting through the roof as firefighting crews tried to put out the blaze from below.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries. Hundreds of residents fled as the fire broke out while workers rescued another 77 who had escaped to the roof or other spaces.

South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety said at least 88 people were treated for minor injuries such as scratches or lightly inhaling smoke.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, which they said was nearly put out as of 9 a.m. local time, as reported by CBC.CA.

Chile keeps eyes on Chinese fishing fleet along South American Coast

The Chilean government is keeping close tabs on a large fleet of Chinese fishing vessels that has stirred up controversy further north along the Pacific coast of South America, Foreign Minister Andres Allamand said on Thursday.

Allamand said Chile´s Defense Ministry and Navy were monitoring the advance of the fleet in order to protect the "sovereignty" of the country´s exclusive economic zone.

The fleet consists of some 300 ships that frequent the Pacific Ocean, often around Peruvian waters, Allamand said.

The boats, previously fishing for giant squid near the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador, angered the domestic fishing industry in Peru last month and sparked a Twitter war between Washington and Beijing.

The U.S. Embassy in Lima said in September the Chinese vessels had a history of avoiding tracking and seemed to "be dumping plastic" pollutants. The Chinese embassy responded that it attached great importance to protecting the environment and the ocean. "We hope that the Peruvian public is not deceived by false information," it said on Twitter.

Chile´s foreign minister said that Chilean officials had not made contact with the Chinese government. He said the fleet includes private ships "and some that may have some connection with the state."

Chile´s long Pacific coastline offers an abundance of fish and shellfish, a critical source of income for fishermen in communities throughout the country, US News reported.

Gold price forecast: gold markets continue to try to fill gap

Gold fell significantly over the last couple of days, as we gapped lower to kick off the Wednesday session. Since then, we have been trying to fill that gap.

Gold markets went higher during the trading session on Thursday, as we are trying to fill the gap from before. However, we have pulled back a bit to form a bit of a negative looking candle. At this point, it is likely that we continue to see negativity, especially as the US dollar is negative for gold, at least in the short term. The market could go down to the $1850 level where we had seen buyers and could see a little bit of interest. If we break down below there, then it is likely that we go to the $1800 level underneath. That is an area that we had broken out of previously, and of course we have the 200 day EMA underneath there.

On the other hand, if we were to turn around a break above the hammer from the Tuesday session it would be a very bullish sign and could send this market looking towards the $1950 level. Either way, this is a market that will continue to be noisy, and I think there are a lot of concerns out there when it comes to the economy, and therefore we are starting to see money run back towards the US dollar. This could work against the value of gold in the short term, and then we could very well see both of these assets go higher. That of course would be something worth paying attention to because it would show a complete run towards safety. When that happens, both of these markets will continue to be closely watched, according to FX Empire.
