Phnom Penh Military Police arrested 29 Chinese nationals on kidnapping charges on Wednesday (Aug 12), reported Phnom Penh Post.

The suspects are said to have abducted three other Chinese nationals from a hotel in Chaktomuk commune, Daun Penh district.

The operation took place on Wednesday and was led by two deputy commanders – Brigadier General Pu Davy and Brigadier General Phan Daravuth – said the National Military Police Facebook page.

The Daun Penh district Gendarmerie also cooperated in the arrests.

“We detained 29 Chinese nationals, including three women, and freed three victims,” the Facebook post said.

National Military Police spokesman Eng Hy told The Post on Thursday the suspects are being questioned.

“The suspects are being questioned by Military Police, but the investigation is being led by the prosecutor,” he said.

Affiliated Network for Social Accountability (Ansa) executive director San Chey said there are a lot of cases like this in Cambodia.

He said it shows the weakness of Cambodian authorities in letting these people continue to commit offences.

“Authorities in Cambodia seem to be carelessly letting Chinese people live here. This kidnapping happened because there is no management.

“We also doubt they will be punished. They commit the offences in Cambodia, but they are sent to China for punishment,” he said.
