RIO DE JANEIRO - The number of Covid-19 cases in Brazil has exceeded two million. According to Brazilian Government data, the country recorded one million cases just 27 days after becoming the second-highest country having Covid-19 cases in the world after the US. In recent weeks, the country recorded approximately 40,000 new cases of Covid-19 every day.

Speaking to reporters in Brasilia, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said that he again tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a week after he announced the infection. His test again would be taken in the next few days.

Over the last two months, Brazil has recorded more than 30,000 new cases in 24 hours 26 times, and on 11 of those occasions there were more than 40,000 infections, said AFP."Two million is a symbolic number because we don't have wide-scale testing," infectious disease expert from the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn told AFP.

Brazil now has an official total of 72,100 deaths, the health ministry said. The numbers of deaths and cases are usually lower on the weekend because of patchy reporting. Experts say the true totals are likely far higher due to a lack of testing, reported Reuters.

On Thursday, confirmed cases in Brazil totaled 2,012,151, while deaths numbered 76,688.

NEW DELHI — India record more than one million coronavirus infections, hitting a milestone on Friday morning

The virus has been gnawing its way across this country of 1.3 billion people and gaining speed, fueled by high population density, an already beleaguered health care system and a calculation by the central government to lift a nationwide lockdown in hopes of getting the economy up and running, come what may, reported New York Times.

In the afternoon 17/7, according to Worldometers, India has recorded 1,005,871 cases of COVID-19 and 25,622 deaths, while the US has more than 3.6 million cases and Brazil reports more than 2 million. However, epidemiologists predict that India still suffers several months to reach its peak.

"In the next few months, India will continue to witness an increase in new infections, which is the natural progression of any pandemic. As far as it comes, the goal will be to reduce mortality. An important challenge is how to properly allocate the number of beds, "said Giridhar Babu, an epidemiologist at the Indian nonprofit Public Health Organization.

So far, 612,814 Covid-19 Indian patients have recovered, with the recovery rate increased to 63.24%. India affirmed that testing acceleration, timely diagnosis, and effective management of patients through home isolation with supervised or active medical care in hospitals have helped the recovery rate rise sharply, exceeding the number of cases.

But as India’s number of confirmed new infections keeps hitting record highs, many states and cities have been locking down again. In some areas, long lines of bodies snake out of cremation grounds. India is now racking up about 30,000 new reported infections each day — more than any other country except the United States and Brazil, and it is catching up to Brazil, said New York Times.

Authorities imposed fresh lockdowns and designated new containment zones in several states this week, including the largely rural Bihar state in the east and the southern tech hub Bengaluru, where cases have spiked, according to Reuters.
