The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars is Hollywood’s most prestigious artistic award in the film industry. Since 1927, nominees and winners are selected by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). 17 branches are represented within the near 10,000 person membership. The branches are actors, associates, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, documentary, executives, film editors, makeup and hairstylists, marketing and public relations, members-at-large, members-at-large (artists’ representatives), music, producers, production design, short films and feature animation, sound, visual effects and writer.
The 2021 Oscars ceremony had been due to take place on 28 February, but was pushed back by two months to give film-makers additional "flexibility". The eligibility window has been accordingly extended to the end of February, with nominations set to be announced on 15 March, BBC reported. There is still no official statement on if the Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre or how it will navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges it has inflicted on the Hollywood industry, as Variety informed. Since the March lockdowns, the COVID-19 pandemic has crippled the film industry, with movie theaters still closed and production halted. In response, the Academy extended the eligibility timeline from Dec. 31 to Feb. 28, 2021, in addition to having films that premiere on streaming platforms qualify for submission. |
