Where & When are the 2020 Olympics being held?

The Philippines is expected to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games have been postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision to go on with the Olympic Games this year was made after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo Organizing Committee agreed on measures to make the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 safe for all participants and spectators.

The Olympics opening ceremony is set to be about four hours long. The event will begin at 8 pm to midnight local time, which is 7 pm to 11 pm in the Philippines.

Watch 2020 Olympics on Free TV in the Philippines

The MVP group of companies on Friday announced that it would deliver multi-platform, world-class coverage for the upcoming Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. With the tagline “See us stronger,” Cignal TV, TV5, the Philippines’ largest fully integrated telco PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) would bring in coverage of the anticipated multi-sport event through their combined TV, over-the-top (OTT) mobile and internet platforms.

Cignal head of marketing Guido Zaballero said the free TV coverage will be "focused on our Filipino athletes, some gold medal matches, and relevant sports and events." These would be available not just to Filipino fans and sports enthusiasts in the Philippines but also abroad, according to Rappler.

“The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 symbolize the highest level of athletic excellence and stands as a beacon of hope for Filipino athletes and sports spectators, both here and abroad. In our commitment to providing the best sports content to our viewers, we will ensure extensive coverage and daily access to the Games across our free-to-air, pay TV, and OTT platforms, and through our partnership with Smart and PLDT,” Robert Galang, president & CEO of Cignal TV and TV5 said in a statement.

Watch 2020 Olympics on Paid TV in the Philippines

Cignal subscribers have access to more Olympic content as One Sports+ will air eight hours of coverage daily. One Sports is a commercial sports-centric terrestrial and satellite television network in the Philippines. It is a joint venture of Nation Broadcasting Corporation and Cignal TV, Inc. under the PLDT media arm MediaQuest Holdings.

Also, Cignal, a Philippine satellite television and IPTV provider, owned by Cignal TV Inc., will have two pop-up channels dedicated to the Olympics.

Watch 2020 Olympics Online in the Philippines

The Olympics can be streamed online in multiple ways. Fans can watch the Games on Cignal Play through its website (cignalplay.com) or app, which can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

PLDT will also offer ten channels to select PLDT Triple Play subscribers, rounding out the group’s comprehensive multi-platform coverage for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, said InterAkson.

Smart subscribers, meanwhile, can access the Olympics on their mobile phones through the gigafest.smart website.

Philippine Team in 2020 Olympics

Since the Philippines first participated in the 1924 Paris Olympics, the country has been able to win a total of 10 medals, three silvers and seven bronzes. The first was in the 1928 edition, courtesy of swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso's bronze in the men's 200m backstroke. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz is the country's latest Olympic medalist, having won silver in the 2016 Rio Games, said TV5.
