Memorial Service Held for Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in South Sudan

The entire Party, the army force and the people mourn the passing of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, including Vietnamese peacekeepers performing duties tens of thousands of kilometers away from the Fatherland. The Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 operates according to schedule, ensuring the maintenance of admission and treatment according to the requirements of the United Nations. The Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 is stationed in an isolated area.

The staff must work with limited resources due to heavy rain and floods. All roads are cut off at the moment. Since 100% of the roads in Bentiu are dirt roads, vehicles will get stuck and overturned due to muddy conditions after the rain.

"We respectfully offer our condolences and express our gratitude for the great contributions that the late Party General Secretary has made to the Fatherland. Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 is determined, and united to make more efforts to complete all assigned tasks and build a good image of the country and people of Vietnam to show international friends, to love up to the important responsibilities that the Party and the army force have assigned,"

The medical staff of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5

According to Doctor Nguyen Ha Ngoc, Director of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5, the Bentiu area is a disputed area, very deprived and difficult. In recent days, peacekeeping forces have not been able to access the residential areas of indigenous people due to floods.

With their enthusiastic spirit, each of the staff of the Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 contributed their own efforts with what they had in hand and created "unimaginable" stories.

The first story is about the black background cloth for the memorial service, as shared by Doctor Pham Hoang Gia. At the Field Hospital, there was absolutely no black cloth, and in the stationed area it was impossible to go to purchase one due to the rain and floods.

"Even if we could get to the local residential area, there would be no place to buy it, because this is a very poor residential area, mainly refugees, I had the initiative to take a roll of available white cloth, then use a bottle of Chinese ink, which I prepared from Vietnam to practice calligraphy,” said Doctor Pham Hoang Gia.

Doctor Gia dyed the cloth black from the ink bottle to use as a background for the altar. It had to be dyed over and over again, which took many layers of spraying to cover unevenly dyed black areas until the cloth met the requirements.

After the cloth is dyed, it must be dried on a rainy day. Drying the fabric became a new challenge. Doctor Pham Thi Thanh Giang, nurse Tran Nhu Ngoc, and Nurse Pham Thi Bich Van took turns drying the fabric with their own personal hair dryers.

The width of the backdrop cloth was not a match with the actual wall on which the altar was placed. Nurses Nguyen Thi Nhung and Nguyen Thi Thanh Hang took on this challenge by measuring, cutting, and sewing the backdrop cloth to make it most reasonable and suitable.

At the same time, Chief of Administration Tran Thuan Trang, along with nurses Bui Thi Hue, Duong Kieu Loan, and Nguyen Thi Nhu Ngoc, printed, measured, and cut up from A4 paper the title of the memorial service to paste onto the black background. The final step was for nurse Nguyen Thanh Le Nhan to iron the black backdrop and national flag to make it as formal as possible.

Wreaths for the memorial service are also unavailable, so all 10 people of the women's group of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 took the yellow and white paper to make them by hand. Those who knew the technique taught those who didn't, all staff divided the steps so the wreaths could be ready as soon as possible.

"Decorating the altar is a big challenge due to the lack of materials since they cannot be purchased or were unavailable on site. In such conditions, with consensus, solidarity, and creativity to overcome all difficulties, we determined to carry out and organize the memorial service most solemnly and properly with what can be deployed,"

They also must find a photo frame and while struggling to find a solution, comrade Hoang Trung Hieu, a member of the Air Rescue Team (AMET), volunteered to make one from scratch so that it is best fit the photo that comrade Nguyen Phuoc Tuong, Head of the Planning Department (Operation) had prepared.

Thanks to the efforts of the staff and medical staff of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5, the altar of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was completed right at the field facility in South Sudan.

"After completing the altar of Uncle Trong, no one said anything but our eyes were filled with encouragement, appreciation, and emotion for each other. We thanked each other and admired each other's efforts to complete the preparation that seemed simple but was very difficult in our current circumstances. Even though we are far away from the Fatherland, we understand that in our hearts, the Fatherland always shines forever, and no matter how far away, our hearts always beat with the same rhythm as our compatriots,” exclaimed nurse Nguyen Thi Thanh Hang, Head of the Women's Group, Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5.
