A mission taking only 30 seconds
"Attention! Attention! Someone is going to jump down near the middle tower!" - a colleague called Thanh with a screaming voice. Left his glass of water, Mr. Thanh hastily put on a reflective shirt and ran as quickly as he could. It was nearly 0 o'clock at night, the Can Tho bridge was foggy and windy. About 3 minutes later, Thanh arrived at the middle tower, finding a young man sat on the edge of the bridge, looking in the distance.
Thanh called another colleague to come with him. They walked slowly, pretending to show no concern towards the young man. Suddenly, Thanh accelerated and grabbed the young man's hand. His colleague immediately climbed to the outside of the bridge to bring the man inside. In less than 30 seconds, the rescue succeeded. Convinced by Thanh, the 20-year-old man gave up the idea of jumping off the bridge. He thanked the two men in reflective clothing and left. It was one of dozens of successful rescues that Thanh and the members of Can Tho Bridge Maintenance Group have conducted over the past 10 years.

Can Tho Bridge Maintenance Group, including about 50 people was formed when the Can Tho Bridge opened for traffic in 2010. Their work is maintenance, patrol, detection on the Can Tho bridge. Saving jumpers is a special task, as it is not on the list of repairing the Can Tho bridge that the team is in charge of. According to Thanh, because of this special task, many people assign the Can Tho Bridge Maintenance Group the name "Can Tho Bridge Security Squad", or "Rescue Squad of Can Tho Bridge".
Thanh said that normally, people do not go out to the bridge just to sit and enjoy the scene. Only those who intended to jump off the bridge would do such a dangerous thing. What he said coincided with the story of the young man, who said that due to debt, he intended to commit suicide. "When detecting people with suicidal signals, our team will find a way to persuade them to go back inside. In some urgent cases, we will use professional skills to coerce and put people in safe places", Thanh said.

Over the past 10 years, "Rescue Squad of Can Tho Bridge" has seen uncountable people who attempted to come here to commit suicide. However, not all rescue success. Hua Nhon Hau (a member of Can Tho Bridge Maintenance Group) was still haunted when looked back at the jumpers who died because the rescue team did not timely receive the news or failed to persuade.
The 2,75-km-long Can Tho Bridge connects Can Tho city with Vinh Long province. With a height of about 50 m, few cases of jumping can survive. According to statistics, jumpers often die immediately after getting medical water as a result of severely damaged spleens or lungs due to high pressure when jumping off the bridge.

Ready on duty all 24 hours
As their job is to maintain and repair Can Tho Bridge, the team has to work all 24 hours per day to ensure the traffic availability of the Western arterial bridge. About 50 members are divided into different shifts during the day to ensure that when something goes wrong, they are the first force to come to the scene to handle.
Can Tho Bridge was formed to replace the special mission of the Can Tho ferry, which is to connect provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta. Ten years since its inauguration, the special "squad" has tirelessly carried on their duty. To them, two ten-meter bridge towers are their beloved homes. This "small house" is also a place to keep all laughter and sad feelings when unfortunate incidents happen.

It was 20:45 pm on November 11. "I received a call from my husband's colleague, Hai. He told me that my husband had an accident and that he was taken to Can Tho City General Hospital," said Hong (Vo Ngoc Hai's wife). Just a few months ago, Mr. Ho Ngoc Thang (Hai's colleague) died as he was hit by a motorcycle while working on the bridge. Over the past several days, Ms. Hong persuaded her husband to quit his job as a member of Can Tho Maintenance Group but Hai did not agree. During the days living in the hospital, he said that he missed his job and his "squad brothers".
"I will go back to work", Hai said, "but I will be more cautious. I hope to continue to be attached to this profession as I find it helpful to many people. I hope that bad fortunes shall not occur to my colleagues the way they did to me, or to Ho Ngoc. Thắng. I hope that everyone will be safe"
