The Vietnamese Consulate General in Fukuoka prefecture has confirmed that the missing interns were working at the Aioigumi Joint Stock Company in the village of Shiiba, Miyazaki prefecture, located on Kyushu Island where rainfall of over 400 millimeters was recorded on September 6.

About 23,000 people in 11 prefectures were taking shelter at one point on Monday afternoon, and some 475,000 houses suffered temporary blackouts in Kyushu.

Even as Typhoon Haishen headed for the Korean Peninsula, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of torrential rain, strong winds and tidal surges in some areas, urging people across a wide area to remain vigilant.

Prior to the landing of Haishen, concerned that the two interns’ accommodation near the company might be unsafe in the storm, the director suggested them to take shelter at his house, which was also the firm’s office.

However, the Consulate General said, the powerful typhoon triggered a mudslide on a mountain there, making this house collapse into the bank of a nearby river. The two Vietnamese male interns, together with the director’s wife and child, went missing as a result. Meanwhile, the director in his 70s suffered broken ribs and was hospitalised.

Japanese police officers are searching for the missing.

Vietnamese Consul General in Fukuoka Vu Binh said shortly after being notified of the incident, the Consulate General has promptly carried out citizen protection measures.

It has also worked with and received active coordination from relevant agencies of Japan in information provision and search for the Vietnamese citizens.

Earlier, he added, right after receiving information about Super Typhoon Haishen, they had issued warnings for the Vietnamese community on its website, as well as on websites and fan pages of Vietnamese organisations and associations in the region.

They have also kept contact with Vietnamese people’s associations and groups, along with some businesses and schools with a large number of Vietnamese in the areas the Consulate General is in charge of so as to have a good grasp of their situation, urge them to take prevention measures and receive information to implement timely citizen protection measures if necessary.

The Japan's weather agency said that the strongest gusts on record were observed at more than 30 locations as the typhoon passed. In the Nomozaki district of the city of Nagasaki gusts reaching a record 213.84 kilometers per hour were registered in the early hours of Monday.

On Fukue Island in the prefecture, rainfall of up to 88 mm per hour was recorded.

In the 24 hours to 6 pm Tuesday, rainfall of up to 150 mm was forecast for the Tokai region of central Japan, and 100 mm for the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo./.
