According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), on January 5, the strong cold air has been reported moving south. It is forecasted that on January 7, this strong cold air unit will intensify and affect the Northern mountainous region. In the afternoon and evening, it will reach other parts of the North; then later move to North Central Coast, the Central Central Coast and some parts of the South Central.
Snow and frost may appear in the North in the next few days
Due to the influence of the strong cold air, from nearly morning on January 7, the rain will appear in the North. From the night of January 7, some places in the Central provinces may see heavy rain. From the night of January 7, in provinces in the North and in the region from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, the weather became freezing (the focus of damaging cold was concentrated in the provinces of Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son) with the lowest temperature 8-11 degrees.
Mountainous areas may reach 4-7 degrees, while higher mountains may be cold enough to have snow, frost. The temperature of 13-17 degrees is said to appear in provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai, while Central Highland will turn cold from January 9.
From January 6, the waters from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, the North of Bien Dong Sea (including Hoang Sa archipelago) and in the middle of the East Sea welcomes strong northeastern wind of level 6, and waves from 2.0 to 4.0 m high. The Gulf of Tonkin and the waters from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai also witness strong northeast wind and waves from 1.5 to 3.0 m high.
From January 7 to 8, in the Gulf of Tonkin, the Central Coast, and the South, there will be strong northeastern wind level 7. The North and the Middle of the Bien Dong Sea (including Hoang Sa archipelago) will also see strong northeastern wind and high waves.
In the area of Hanoi, from the afternoon and night of January 7, there will be a little rain. The cold weather will arrive later, January 7 night, with the lowest of 8-11 degrees.
Experts' comments on the upcoming intense cold
Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, said that this cold wave, although not as strong as the latest one and can not be comparable to the record in 2016, is also notable.
Accordingly, experts divide the cold spell in the North in the coming time into two phases. Phase 1 (from January 7 to 10), the area damagingly cold all day, with high humidity and rain, so the real-feel temperature will be even colder than the actual temperature.
In phase 2 (January 11 to 13), the cold air is strengthened, but the North will turn to a state of dry cold. At night, the temperature is low but during the day, the temperature increases rapidly, bringing more comfortable feelings. However, during this period, as the humidity is low and the night temperature continues to decrease, the high mountains see the possibility of frost and snow.
