US donates nearly 40 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam
The US government delivered an additional 1.7 million doses of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine to Vietnam this week through the COVAX facility, bringing the total number of vaccines the U.S. government has supported in Vietnam to almost 40 million. “But our work is not done - we will continue our partnership with Vietnam to provide Covid assistance to ensure a safe and strong recovery from this pandemic,” the US Embassy in Hanoi said on its Facebook fanpage.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided Vietnam with two mobile oxygen systems that help create medical oxygen from the air and can be quickly moved between local medical facilities to help save the patient’s life.
The US has also given Vietnam ultra-low temperature freezers to support the country in storing Covid-19 vaccines. In October 2021, the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology held a ceremony to receive the first 77 out of 111 freezers provided by the US Department of Defense with a total value of about approx. US$1 million.
US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper, on behalf of the US Department of Defense, presented 34 more such freezers to the Ministry of Health in Ho Chi Minh City last March. The US has hit a new milestone of distributing 500 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines to more than 110 countries around the world.
Since the start of the pandemic, Vietnam has logged a total of 10,489,319 infections, ranking 12th out of 227 countries and territories globally. The Health Ministry also announced an additional 124,630 recoveries on the same day to bring the total number of recovered cases to close to over 9 million. 18 deaths were also confirmed over the past 24 hours, duly raising the death toll to 42,975. Compared with Asia, the total number of deaths ranks sixth out of 49th, third in ASEAN, with the death rate per one million people being 23rd out of 49 Asian countries and territories and fourth in ASEAN. The average number of new infections recorded over the past week now stands at more than 18,000 daily cases nationwide. |
