Covid-19 infections fall to a five-month low of 8,800 over 24 hours
The daily number of fresh coronavirus infections in Vietnam nosedived to a five-month low of 8,813 in 60 cities and provinces across the country, the Ministry of Health said in its coronavirus update on April 24. Official data from the Ministry of Health show that only one individual tested positive for the SARS-Cov-2 virus upon returning from overseas, and the remainder were locally acquired infections.
Of the total, as many as 6,245 cases were documented in the community. None of the localities registered more than 1,000 cases each, and Hanoi topped localities in infection number, recording 970 fresh cases during the day.
Ho Chi Minh City, the largest and busiest locality in Vietnam, only reported 48 new cases, a record low figure over the past months. Localities that saw the number of infections decrease most compared to the previous day were Phut Tho (-242), Ba Ria – Vung Tau (-156), and Gia Lai (-153). Meanwhile, localities that saw the number of infections rise most compared to the previous day were Ha Tinh (+137), Ben Tre (+67), and Lai Chau (+39).

Over 374,200 doses of Covid-19 vaccines were administered to children from 5 to under 12 years old
As of April 23 afternoon, 374,255 doses of vaccines had been administered to children from 5 to under 12 years old in 41 out of the 63 provinces and cities nationwide, according to the Ministry of Health. The vaccination campaign for this age group started in northern Quang Ninh province on April 14.
In Vietnam, there are more than 11.8 million children from 5 to below 12 years old. About 3.6 million of them are subject to a three-month delay of vaccination after contracting Covid-19, and they will get the first shot in July or August.
Meanwhile, the 8.2 million remainders began receiving inoculation on April 14, and they will receive the second dose in the second quarter, the MoH’s Department of Preventive Medicine reported, noting that COVID-19 vaccination for children is one of the important tasks of the health sector in 2022.
The country had received 4.6 million Covid-19 vaccine doses donated by Australia for child vaccination. Over 2.3 million doses have been allocated so far. The Netherlands has also committed to providing 2 million doses of Moderna vaccine while France will donate 2 million doses of Pfizer vaccine for children. These vaccines are scheduled to arrive in Vietnam in April.

Hue Imperial Citadel opens night street zone
A night street zone around Hue Imperial Citadel City, a UNESCO-recognised World Cultural Heritage, was launched on April 22 at Ngo Mon Square in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, with crowds of excited residents and tourists descending on the location.
Following several postponements caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a night street zone around Hue Imperial Citadel City finally opens at Ngo Mon Square. The night street zone, scheduled to open between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, is expected to bring a fresh experience for tourists.
The new service is set to support local tourism recovery following a Covid-19 inflicted hiatus. The night street is anticipated to offer guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Hue royal space through a variety of unique art programs. Visitors will also be able to explore traditional craft products and Hue cuisine which can be found at various stalls located throughout the zone.
On average 11,593 cases were recorded in Vietnam daily in the past seven days. As of 6 pm on April 24, Vietnam has confirmed more than 10.5 million infections, ranking 12th out of 227 countries and territories worldwide. Of the total, nearly 9.1 million patients have recovered, and 43,013 patients have died of the virus and underlying illnesses. As many as 212 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered nationwide. Of the figure, more than half a million doses have been administered to children aged from five to under 12 years. |
