Vietnam receives medical supplies from Australia, UNICEF, Thailand

The Health Ministry’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology on November 9 received 1,910 vaccine fridges, 5 million syringes, and 50,000 safety boxes within the framework of a vaccination support project in Vietnam funded by the Australian Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Australian Government committed a total of 5.2 million vaccine doses to Vietnam, of which 1.5 million AstraZeneca doses manufactured by Australia were already delivered to Vietnam, and the remainder is provided via a procurement contract between the Australian Government and the UNICEF.

The Government of Thailand has presented medical supplies worth THB 2.5 million (US$ 75,000) to help Vietnam in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. A hand-over ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok on November 9, according to VNA.

The donations mirror the long-standing friendship between Vietnam and Thailand as the two countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, Thai ministry Thani Thongphakdi and President of the Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Association Sanan Angubolkul said.

Singapore to allow 7-day home isolation for vaccinated Vietnamese travelers

Fully vaccinated travelers from four ASEAN countries including Vietnam will have their stay-home periods cut by three days to a week upon entering Singapore from Friday. The pandemic situation in the Southeast Asia region is "fast stabilizing" and Singapore has adjusted the risk classification for more ASEAN countries, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Monday, as cited by Channel News Asia.

Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam will be moved from "Category 3", deemed at higher risk of Covid-19 infection, to "Category 2", with similar Covid-19 risk profiles to Singapore.

Passengers from these countries would have to isolate for seven days at declared places of accommodation instead of the former 10 days and present a negative PCR test result on the seventh day. The stay-home notice requires travelers to remain in their place of residence or dedicated facility for the stipulated period.

HCMC mulls reopening schools in December

Districts with low and medium pandemic risks may see students return to class from Dec. 10, according to a plan submitted to the city's legislators. Before allowing students to return to school, teachers and staff would receive safety training and a parent meeting held. Schools must meet Covid-19 safety standards, and prepare themselves to switch to online learning in case the pandemic turns complicated, according to a plan by the HCMC Department of Education and Training.

Districts with high levels of coronavirus risk would combine in-person and online classes and students of 1st, 2nd, 6th, 9th and 12th grade prioritized for in-person sessions. In areas with very high coronavirus risks, the department said online classes and televised lessons must continue. An area's Covid risk level is determined by its vaccination rate and the number of local infections per population.

For now, of all 22 localities in Ho Chi Minh City, 19 districts and Thu Duc City are designated to have low and medium risks while Nha Be and Can Gio are tagged as high risk. HCMC has around 1.7 million students in over 2,400 schools. Except for Thanh An Primary and Secondary-High schools on Thanh An Island of Can Gio District, others are currently operating online.
