The new patients brought the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,029, including 547 linked to the outbreak in the central city of Da Nang as from July 25.

According to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, two of the new cases were found in an area under lockdown in Hoa Tien ward of Hoa Vang district and the rest were found in living in Ngu Hanh Son district.

Notably, five cases in Ngu Hanh Son live in a family and they have tested positive for the virus after having contact with a COVID-19 patient announced on August 24.

As many as four patients were given the all-clear on the same day, lifting the total of recovered cases to 592.

There have been 27 fatalities so far. Most of the fatalities were elderly people who suffered from serious illnesses such as end-stage kidney cancer, severe pneumonia, diabetes and multi-organ failure.

The health ministry has conducted more than one million PCR tests since the COVID-19 pandemic first began in late January.

Vietnam currently has 71 facilities that can perform confirmatory COVID-19 tests, capable of conducting a total of 34,000 tests a day.

On August 20, the health ministry sent an urgent notice to all State-managed hospitals and health centres to increase SARS-CoV-2 screenings to early detect COVID-19 cases in a bid to reduce risks of the virus infiltration into wards where patients are in poor health, which happened in Da Nang, resulting in over 20 deaths.

Meanwhile, a total of 71,821 people who had close contact with COVID-19 patients and came from pandemic-hit areas are under quarantine nationwide, including nearly 320 Vietnamese citizens were repatriated from Canada on a flight that landed at Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh on August 24.

Passengers included people under 18, the elderly, ill persons, students who finished learning courses but lacked accommodation, workers with expired visas or labour contracts, stranded tourists, and others with special disadvantages.

The Vietnamese Embassy sent staff to assist the citizens in handling boarding procedures at the Toronto international airport.

Security, safety and hygiene measures were carried out throughout the flight to protect their health and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Upon landing at the airport, those on board received health check-ups and sent to concentrated quarantine facilities.

The authorities also have made efforts to contain the importation of the disease by implementing a range of regulations regarding COVID-19 prevention and control as Vietnamese authorities and overseas missions plan to arrange more flights to bring Vietnamese citizens home./.
