Vietnamese-American woman nominated by Biden to be NASA Chief Financial Officer

President Joe Biden has nominated Margaret Vo Schaus, director of business operations in the Department of Defense’s research and engineering office, to be the next chief financial officer at NASA. According to Executive, Schaus would manage the space agency’s more than $20 billion annual budget if the Senate approves the nomination.
“The chief financial officer is critical to the success of NASA’s long-term missions. Through her past work in government, Margaret has demonstrated exceptional management skills and a commitment to lifting and supporting a diverse workforce. If confirmed, I look forward to working with Margaret and the Biden administration to develop and execute NASA’s more than $20 billion budget and ensuring the agency remains a good and responsible steward of every tax dollar invested in NASA,” acting NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said in a recent statement.
Schaus is a career member of the Senior Executive Service. Over the past decade, she has held numerous leadership roles with responsibility for the financial management and business operations of science and engineering organizations at the Departments of Energy and Defense.

She currently serves as the director for business operations in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, where she is responsible for oversight of a multibillion-dollar budget. In her current capacity, Schaus provides financial oversight for DOD research and technology programs. She previously worked at the Department of Energy as deputy director of advanced fossil technology system research and development.
Her federal career also included a short stint as acting deputy assistant commissioner for data transparency at the Bureau of Fiscal Service and more than four years as a senior analyst in the Government Accountability Office.
Schaus has been recognized with awards, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Exceptional Civilian Service Award, the Department of Energy’s Distinguished Career Service Award, and the Secretary of Energy’s Honor Award, according to NASA.
Schaus is a first-generation Vietnamese American, born in Michigan and raised in Southern California. She received Bachelor of Arts degrees in science, technology, society, as well as English from Stanford University, and a Master of Science in management science and engineering from Stanford University.
On the same day, Biden announced his intent to nominate 11 other individuals to serve and further the Biden Administration’s commitment to modern sustainable infrastructure and clean energy future.
