The Association of Vietnamese in Malta has freshly been set up, representing the community of about 400 people, VNA reported Monday.

The establishment ceremony took place in Malta on August 14, debuting its executive committee.

Chairman Nguyen Hoai Nam and Secretary Nguyen Thi Nhan said the association aims to promote mutual support within the growing community.

In the coming time, the executive committee will continue to consolidate personnel and find people with the capacity and enthusiasm to provide the best service, worthy of all the trust.

On behalf of the association's executive board, Nam thanks the ambassador and all staff of the embassy for supporting the association and hopes to always receive their deep attention.

Secretary Nhan gave a speech, raising the needs and aspirations of the community wishing to establish a Vietnamese Association in Malta to share and help each other in life; thanks the Embassy for the encouragement, support and enthusiastic guidance, especially after the first meeting of the community with Ambassador Duong Hai Hung in June 2022.

Although the Vietnamese community in Malta is still modest, estimated at 400 people, it tends to increase because Malta is a potential land for investment activities, working and studying.

The Vietnamese community in Malta has shown solidarity, hard work, compliance with local laws and affection towards the homeland.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy and Malta Duong Hai Hung stated the Party and State always pay attention to the affairs of overseas Vietnamese, with policies targeting the group increasingly improved.

The diplomat held that the new association will gather the Vietnamese community there, protect their legitimate rights and interests, support them in life and integration into the host country, and preserve and promote Vietnam’s traditional culture.

Hung said the association will connect the group with their home country and help develop further the sound friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Malta.

The number of Vietnamese in Malta is increasing, as the European country boasts potential for investment, employment and learning.

Pham Van Hong, vice head of the Vietnam-Italy Chamber of Commerce authorized by Dinh Hoang Thang, president of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Europe delivered a congratulatory speech and officially confirmed the Vietnamese Association in Malta as the the newest member of the Union, thereby conveying the invitation to represent the association to attend the union's congress next October.

In July, Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy and Malta Duong Hai Hung came to present his credentials to President of Malta George Vella in Valletta capital during which President Vella spoke highly of Vietnam’s development attainments, economic potential, and growing role and standing in the region and at multilateral forums, as well as the great strides seen in the Vietnam - EU partnership.

He recommended Vietnam and Malta capitalise on existing advantages such as the traditional friendship, the two economies’ dynamism, and the cooperation frameworks that have taken effect or are being completed so as to promote effective cooperation in potential spheres like trade, investment, labour and tourism, along with priority areas, including navigation security, climate change, technology, and innovation, on both bilateral and multilateral aspects.

Vietnam and Malta officially set up diplomatic ties in 1974.

The island-country Malta uses English as its major language and its strength is tourism, training and education.
