On September 1, the Vietnamese Embassy in South Africa held a flag raising ceremony and an incense offering ceremony to President Ho Chi Minh on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2021) and 76 years of National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2021).

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the distancing regulations of the host country, the flag raising ceremony and incense offering ceremony were held neatly and solemnly at the embassy headquarters in Pretoria with the participation of all officers and employees of the Embassy, representative agencies and the Vietnamese community in South Africa.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Hoang Van Loi reviewed the glorious milestones in 76-year fighting for national independence, building and defending the Fatherland.

The Ambassador said: "As the Resolution of the 13th Party Congress assessed, the position and power of the country has been developed to a new height, the position and prestige of the country has been increasingly enhanced in the international arena.”

The Ambassador also shared with the Vietnamese community in South Africa Vietnam's recent achievements in the context of the Government's determination to both fight the pandemic, ensure people's health, and maintain sustainable economic development.

Thanks to the determination of the Government and the consensus of the people, in 2020 Vietnam is one of the few countries that still maintains a positive GDP growth rate of 2.91%, and the first 6 months of 2021 saw a growth of 5.64% over the same period last year. Vietnam is considered one of the 16 most successful emerging economies in the world.

In his speech, the Ambassador also summed up the activities of the Vietnamese community in South Africa in recent years, especially the recent noble deeds in the context of complicated pandemic developments, including: raising money to support the prevention and control of the Covid-19 pandemic at home, giving masks to support localities, schools, and communities in difficulty in South Africa and some neighboring countries in the southern Africa region.

Ambassador Hoang Van Loi also called on the community to continue to contribute more, either directly or through the Embassy, ​​to the Government's Covid-19 vaccine fund to serve purchasing, researching, producing domestic vaccines and using Covid-19 vaccines for people.

Reviewing the good traditional relationship between Vietnam and South Africa, the Ambassador emphasized that South Africa is now a leading development partner of Vietnam in Africa.

At the end of his speech, the Ambassador called on the Vietnamese community to continue to contribute to the two countries' relations, abide by local laws, and promote the spirit of Vietnamese people who always unite, help and support each other.

In the warm atmosphere of Independence Day, the Vietnamese community in South Africa sang the national anthem and listened to the Declaration of Independence, which President Ho Chi Minh solemnly proclaimed before the people, the country and the whole world 76 years ago at the historic Ba Dinh Square.

Tran Thi Bao Tran, a resident of the Vietnamese community in South Africa, expressed her emotion when attending this ceremony on the occasion of National Day. She said: “It's been a really long time since I've met people, and shared information with each other. Meeting people here, speaking Vietnamese, listening to Vietnamese, standing to salute the flag, joining in the singing of the sacred national anthem, and then eating familiar Vietnamese dishes, this is what Vietnamese expatriates always expect."

Tran said that during her 11 years living in South Africa, she and her family always fully participate in community events organized by the Embassy. She said: “I really hope the pandemic will pass, everyone at home and abroad will have access to the Covid-19 vaccine, ensure health so that life can return to normal, meetings on the occasion of next year's National Day will be more crowded and safer."
