The webinar was attended by more than 200 Vietnamese youth and students from more than 20 countries and regions. The webinar has the desire to listen to the thoughts and aspirations of the young generation of overseas Vietnamese, review the 16-year journey of the Vietnam Summer Camp, exchange and connect overseas Vietnamese youth with young people in the country.

Young generation - Key resource for overseas Vietnamese community development

Addressing the opening session at the webinar, Pham Quang Hieu, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, said that the Vietnam Summer Camp activity has been held for 16 consecutive years with the participation of nearly 2,000 overseas Vietnamese.

The overseas Vietnamese community currently has about 5.3 million, of which about 1.8 million young people and students are living, studying and working in over 130 countries and territories. Deputy Minister Pham Quang Hieu said: “The young generation of overseas Vietnamese is increasing in number and playing an increasingly important role in the development of the overseas Vietnamese community. I hope that the younger generation of overseas Vietnamese has been and will continue to take on the mission of being the key resource for the existence, prosperity and stability of the overseas Vietnamese community.

At the first discussion session, Ambassador Nguyen Phu Binh shared about the birth of the idea of ​​organizing the Vietnam Summer Camp program to bring overseas youth and students back to their roots.

"Through contacts in the country and working in a number of locations in other countries, we realized that one of the thoughts of overseas Vietnamese living abroad is afraid that their children will no longer be attached to the country. Because in the US, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the lifestyle is different from Vietnam, most of the parents work all day and send their children to kindergarten, so they are not fluent in Vietnamese. They know the way of life of the host country better than their own. We think this is probably an important thing to deal with."

Therefore, in 2002, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs proposed to the Prime Minister to establish a Community Support Fund. One of the fund's activities is to help the children of overseas Vietnamese return home to be exposed to their original culture. In 2004, the Committee organized the first Vietnam Summer Camp.

Delegates from Slovakia, Russia, Poland, Laos, Hungary and the Czech Republic also reminisced about their experiences in the Vietnam Summer Camp programs and unforgettable impressions on their homeland of Vietnam.

Back to Vietnam is a wise decision

The second discussion session with the topic "Joining hands for the homeland and the country" highlighted the meaning of Vietnam Summer Camp in connecting and exchanging to promote the role of the young generation of overseas Vietnamese in contributing to the construction and defense of the Fatherland.

At this discussion session, Luong Thanh Nghi, deputy head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, shared about the connection effect, the spread of Vietnam Summer Camp and its role as a bridge connecting the young generation of overseas Vietnamese towards their homeland.

According to Luong Thanh Nghi, each overseas Vietnamese youth after the summer camp journey becomes cultural ambassadors, contributing to spreading the "quality" of Vietnamese culture and wisdom to international friends.

Joining the summer camp from the first day, Nguyen Huu Hung Cuong, an expatriate from Slovakia, returned to Vietnam to set up a business and is currently the Director of FPT Software's business division.

"After participating in the Vietnam summer camp, I worked at the Vietnamese Embassy in Slovakia for 5 years and participated in many activities of the Vietnamese community. When I decided to return to Vietnam, I encountered some difficulties. However, in the process of meeting and exchanging with foreign partners and businesses, I learned that foreigners are very interested in learning about Vietnam. Vietnam is a developed country, the economy and the Vietnamese community are also very strong. It can be said that 2 years working in Vietnam is a very right and wise decision for me and I want to continue to contribute to the country."

Nguyen Hung Cuong said that each young overseas Vietnamese participating in the Vietnam Summer Camp are messengers to spread the image and homeland of Vietnam to the world. Therefore, he hopes that the Vietnam Summer Camp activities will continue to be maintained and expand to a wider audience of young people.

Hoang Kim Quan (an expatriate in Ukraine) said that his participation in the Vietnam Summer Camp in 2012 motivated him to learn more about the origin, culture and history of the nation, thereby making the decision to return to his homeland. He wishes to make his small contribution in the construction of the country.

Many overseas Vietnamese share about the spread value after attending the Vietnam Summer Camp. At the same time, they contributed some ideas to make the Vietnam Summer Camp more lively, attracting many young people and overseas students to participate. Especially, in the context of the complicated development of the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam, overseas Vietnamese from many areas have shared and expressed their willingness to take practical actions to support the country in the pandemic prevention and control.
