According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic system is visible over the Comorin region and adjacent parts.

The northeast monsoon season ends after 31 December. But this time a steady flow of eastern winds is persisting over the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu. An anti-cyclonic circulation lies over central India.

During the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue over Tamil Nadu and southern parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep.

After 24 hours, rain activities will reduce over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. But moderate rains over Lakshadweep will continue even after that. Light to moderate rains are expected over North Kerala and Interior Tamil Nadu.

Dense fog is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in the morning. Also, in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and parts of Delhi, the maximum temperature will be below 16 degrees, due to which cold day conditions may continue.

The cold wave conditions are likely to continue in parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.

The effect of cold northwest winds is now visible in parts of eastern India, causing a drop in temperature by 1 or 2 degrees. Cold wave conditions are also prevailing in eastern Uttar Pradesh and parts of Bihar.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

According to Weather.com, as southern India continues to celebrate the 4-day Pongal festival, the cyclonic circulation that brought locally heavy rains to Tamil Nadu on Wednesday will be moving into Lakshadweep on Thursday. Some heavy spells of rain and thunderstorms are likely there on the day. Meanwhile, rains and thunderstorms are expected to persist across Tamil Nadu and Kerala until Sunday, albeit while weakening.

As for the north, cold northwesterly winds are likely to be dominant over the plains in northern and central India until Saturday. Minimum temperatures will tend to be cooler than normal in these parts, and cold wave and/or cold day conditions with some severe intensity are likely over some pockets.

Owing to this intensity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert (“be prepared” for rough conditions) over the states and territories of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh from January 14-16.

Further, dense fog and the resultant low visibility are very likely in some pockets of Northern and Central plains during the morning hours for the next five days. Some parts of Eastern and Northeastern India are likely to see shallow to moderate fog as well.

A feeble cyclonic circulation over Assam could produce isolated snow/rain over Arunachal Pradesh from Friday onwards. It may have some intense and wider extent beyond Monday.

Maximum temperatures will be average or cooler than normal across the northern plains for the next five days.

2-Day Regional Forecast

Dense fog conditions are predicted over these states along with Uttarakhand today. The fog will continue and intensify in the next 3 days, the Met department said.

According to Indian Express, towards south, heavy and widespread rainfalls are predicted over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours.

Besides, fairly widespread rains and thunderstorms are likely over Lakshadweep, while scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected over Tamil Nadu. Isolated rains and thunderstorms are possible over southern Karnataka, Kerala, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Isolated snow/rain is on the cards over Arunachal Pradesh.

Dense fog has been forecast at isolated places over Northern and Central India. Shallow to moderate fog is likely at isolated places over Northeastern and Eastern India. Meanwhile, cold wave and/or cold day conditions with some severe intensity have been predicted over some pockets of Punjab, the Gangetic plains, and Rajasthan.
