Mother Elephant rock has a length of about 200m. The base of the rock has a circumference of nearly 500m and it is about 30m high. The rock is shaped like a giant elephant lying with its back against the majestic Central Highlands. This is also the largest monolithic granite in Vietnam.

From the ground, it only takes about 15 minutes to climb to the highest peak of this rock, through its gentle slopes. From the top of Mother Elephant rock, many landscapes in the region can be observed such as Yang Reh Lake and Chu Yang Sin range, which is also known as the roof of the Central Highlands.

The Legend of Elephant Rock

No one knows when Mother Elephant rock was formed, only saw this rock lying in the middle of Yang Tao valley for a long time. Because of its shape, villagers called it the Elephant Rock.

Local people say that Mother Elephant rock was originally located in the North, facing Lak Lake. But after only one night, people saw the rock lying on the field in the middle of the vast valley, right next to Chu Yang Sin range.

According to the elders, at first, the rock was very soft, like a mudflat extruding onto the ground. Everyone excitedly climbed up, ran, and played on the rock. After that, the stone suddenly became as hard as it is now; on the back of the stone, there are still many vestiges believed to be the footprints of humans and animals from the past.

Visitors often hear the villagers tell stories about the vestiges on the Elephant rock. Among them, there are traces related to the anecdote of the elephant swallowing a beautiful woman.

The elderly in the village said: “Long time ago, in the village, there was a rich man named Y Thui, who has two beautiful daughters, H'Hoa and H'Thao. One afternoon, the two sisters climbed up on the Father Elephant rock, at the same time when the spirit of the once soft rock became hard as regular stone. H'Hoa then fell into the rock and couldn't get out.

Y Thui mobilized all people and elephants and also buffaloes to pull her out, but they could not make it. After 7 days and 7 nights, H'Hoa was completely swallowed into the rock. Everyone stood helplessly watching the young girl slowly sink into the rock and couldn't help her.

That night, H'Hoa appeared in the dream of her relatives, telling them that she was living a very happy life with Yang Tao, the rock god. She told everyone not to grieve, the stone god will bless the village".

Therefore, Mother Elephant rock is considered the soul of local people, they believe in stone as a god.

In addition, the Elephant rock is also considered a god of love. According to legend, couples who love each other often sit on the back of a stone, exchange vows, and pray to the rock god to protect their love.

People who have lost their love or have not had a lover often come to tell the rock god about their story and believe that they will be understood and blessed.
