Dutch researchers report first death from COVID-19 reinfection

An elderly woman in the Netherlands has died after getting COVID-19 a second time, researchers reported on Monday. It’s the first time a death has been reported from reinfection with coronaviru, BNO News reported.

The patient was an 89-year-old woman who was being treated for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare type of white blood cell cancer which is treatable but incurable. The findings were published in the Oxford University Press.

The researchers said the woman arrived at the emergency department earlier this year while suffering from a fever and severe cough. She tested positive for coronavirus and remained hospitalized for 5 days, after which her symptoms subsided completely, except for persisting fatigue.

Nearly 2 months later, just two days after starting a new round of chemotherapy, she developed a fever, cough, and dyspnea. When she was admitted to the hospital, her oxygen saturation was 90 percent with a respiratory rate of 40 breaths per minute. She again tested positive for coronavirus while tests for antibodies were negative at days 4 and 6.

The team had access to test samples from both infections and confirmed that the genetic makeup of each virus was different to a degree which cannot be explained through in-vivo evolution. This supports the finding that the woman was suffering from reinfection with coronavirus.

To date, researchers have confirmed only 23 cases of reinfection, but in all prior cases, the patient recovered.

North Korea's Kim pledges thousands of new homes in storm recovery effort: state media

As reported by Reuters, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to help typhoon-hit areas recover and to build at least 25,000 houses over the next five years, state media said on Wednesday.

Visiting one of the worst-hit areas of North Korea, Kim expressed regret over the more than 50-year-old houses in which people have been living and urged the military to embark on a more ambitious construction plan, KCNA said.

The visit came after Kim appeared to shed tears at the weekend as he thanked citizens for their sacrifices, in the most striking demonstration yet of how he is relying on his “man-of- the-people” persona to tackle his country’s deepening crises.

The military has reached a construction level of 60% for at least 2,300 houses in the Komdok area in South Hamgyong province, northeast of the capital, Pyongyang, the state media said.

Kim said new houses were now only built when the old ones were brought down by natural disasters, and called for a “revolution” in construction plans, starting with building 25,000 houses during his five-year plan set to be unveiled in January.

Police arrest 21 at Thai pro-democracy rally

Police arrested 21 protesters Tuesday during a Bangkok rally that saw dozens of people give a royal motorcade a three-fingered salute -- a show of defiance by Thai pro-democracy activists calling for reforms to the monarchy, according to AFP.

Tuesday's protest at Democracy Monument -- a major intersection that has been the site of previous demonstrations -- drew dozens of supporters chanting and dancing in front of police.

Authorities moved in to clear the road in the late afternoon for a royal motorcade ferrying King Maha Vajiralongkorn, deputy police spokesman Colonel Kissana Phathanacharoen told AFP.

Charges against the 21 protesters include obstructing police and "causing disorder", said a police press release.

Demonstrators threw blue paint across the intersection -- with some splashing uniformed officers -- before the leaders were bundled into a van.

The royal family was scheduled to host the premier at the Grand Palace Tuesday, a public holiday to commemorate the death of the late long-serving King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

When the royal motorcade eventually passed, dozens held up a three-finger salute -- taken from the popular "Hunger Games" film trilogy and harnessed as a pro-democracy symbol.

The ultra-wealthy King Vajiralongkorn sits at the apex of Thai power, supported by the kingdom's military and billionaire clans.

Some protest leaders have called for the abolition of royal defamation laws -- which shields the monarch from criticism -- and for a proper accounting of the institution's fortune, estimated to be some $60 billion.

Gold price prediction: Gold eases rejecting the latest breakout

Gold prices dropped on Tuesday, as the dollar gained traction paving the way for lower gold prices. The Bond markets in the United States reopened after closing on Monday as despite lower yields gold prices moved lower. US inflation figures came out in line with expectations but the lower level of year over year increases weighed on the yellow metal.

Gold prices tumbled on Tuesday after consolidating on Monday and rallying on Friday. Prices pushed below the recent break out level near trend line resistance which was short-term support near 1,908. Additional resistance is seen near the 50-day moving average at 1,936.

Support is seen near the 10-day moving average at 1,901. Medium-term momentum has turned positive as the MACD (moving average convergence divergence) index generated a crossover buy signal. This occurs as the MACD line (the 12-day moving average minus the 26-day moving average) crosses above the MACD signal line (the 9-day moving average of the MACD line. The MACD histogram also generated a crossover buy signal rising above the zero-index line. Short-term momentum has turned positive as the fast stochastic generated a crossover buy signal in the middle of the neutral range.
