Chile sees record COVID-19 cases as two ministers quarantined

Chile registered a new high for coronavirus cases on Monday, with nearly 5,000 infections in 24 hours, including two ministers in President Sebastian Pinera's government.

Health authorities announced 4,895 new infections in the South American country and 43 deaths, Yahoo news reported.

Public Works Minister Alfredo Moreno and Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet said they were among those with the disease.

The 63-year-old minister had placed himself in quarantine after one of his staff tested positive.

Jobet also tested positive after starting to quarantine preventatively on Saturday, "when he experienced mild symptoms, which could be associated with the disease," a statement from the Energy Ministry said.

The 44-year-old minister "has had no direct contact with President Sebastian Pinera or other cabinet members in recent days," the statement said, without specifying how he became infected.

Three other ministers, who had self-quarantined after being in contact with infected people, all tested negative and resumed work, AFP reported.

WHO suspends hydroxychloroquine trials amid safety concerns

The World Health Organization announced Monday that it has temporarily suspended clinical trials of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a potential coronavirus treatment amid safety concerns.

The move comes after a study last week published in medical journal The Lancet indicated that the use of the drug on COVID-19 patients could increase their likelihood of dying, New York Post said.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the clinical trials involving the drug had been “suspended while the safety is reviewed.”

An earlier study of more than 300 male patients at Veterans Health Administration medical centers across the country also found a higher rate of death in those who took the hydroxychloroquine, and the FDA in April cautioned against taking the drug outside of hospitals and clinical trials.

President Trump recently revealed that he had been taking hydroxychloroquine for several weeks to ward off the coronavirus, but said Sunday he is no longer taking the drug.

Coronavirus advances alarmingly in Latin America

While COVID-19 cases are declining in many parts of Europe and Asia, they are still increasing in Central and South America, South Asia and Africa.

Although the measures adopted by most Latin American countries have involved strict social distancing and confinement, the coronavirus gives no truce to the region.

Brazil

With more than 360,000 cases and 22,000 deaths, Brazil has become the world's second major hotspot for coronavirus cases.

The US government has imposed travel restrictions on foreign nationals who have been to Brazil. Non-American citizens who have been in the South American nation in the two weeks before they request entry to the US will be denied that entry.

Ecuador

Thousands of Ecuadorians took to the streets on Monday to protest austerity policies implemented by the government. Big rallies organized by unions and other social organizations were seen in cities such as Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Latacunga, Ibarra, Machala and Urcuquí, according to The Nation.

Ecuador’s president Lenín Moreno, who this Sunday celebrated his third year in power and began his last 12 months in the midst of an economic crisis aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 3,200 people and infected more than 37,300 in the country.

Bolivia

After being the only department in the country free of the coronavirus for weeks, the Beni region in Bolivia has been struck by a sudden outbreak of COVID-19, which has brought its health system to a collapse. The interim government said it will implement an "immediate action plan" with support from the Pan American Health Organization, which had been asked to help set up a 150-bed emergency hospital.

Former President Evo Morales called on the international community to help fight the coronavirus in the region.

Samsung Exynos 880 revealed: The chip to bring 5G to the masses?

Samsung already has two in-house 5G chipsets in the Exynos 980 and Exynos 990, but it’s adding a third to its stable with the newly announced Exynos 880.

The new chipset shares an awful lot in common with the Exynos 980, from the CPU layout (2x Cortex-A77 and 6x Cortex-A55) and Mali-G76 MP5 GPU to the 8nm design and integrated NPU for machine learning, Android authority reported.

So what actually makes the Exynos 880 stand out from the previous chipset, then? For one, the Cortex-A77 cores have a lower clock speed (2Ghz vs 2.2Ghz), which should give a slight CPU performance advantage to the older SoC on paper.

Is Exynos 880 a downgraded Exynos 980?

The new processor also tops out at 2,520 x 1,080 in terms of display support, while the Exynos 980 supports 3,360 x 1,440 screens. It also seems like the new chip only offers Wi-Fi 5 capabilities versus Wi-Fi 6 on the older SoC.

The Exynos 880 offers a maximum of 64MP single camera support (and 20MP+20MP dual), while the Exynos 980 can handle 108MP camera sensors as seen on the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Xiaomi Mi Note 10. So those looking for the highest resolution cameras probably won’t be buying an Exynos 880-toting device.

Furthermore, Samsung’s new processor tops out at 4K/30fps video recording versus 4K/120fps on the older chipset. Clearly this is being positioned a step below the Exynos 980.
