Huong said witnessing the difficulties that Vietnam has suffered, Vietnamese expats in Macau wanted to make a contribution to the homeland’s efforts in Covid-19 prevention and control.

Therefore, the association called for its members to join hands with the home country in fighting against the novel coronavirus and raised more than VND 131 million (US$ 5,686).

“Apart from organizing activities towards the homeland, overseas Vietnamese in Macau has united and supported each other to surmount the difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, the association has presented gifts to those losing jobs due to Covid-19 and coordinated with the Consulate General to support Vietnamese stranded in Macau to return home,” said Huong.

The Overseas Vietnamese in Macau was established on May 1, 2016, with only 10 members. Now, it has about 100 members.

The association has operated in the "spirit of solidarity and mutual support," according to its chairwoman Phan Cuc, who said it had received many certificates of merit from the Consulate General of Vietnam in Hong Kong and Macau.

On the morning of June 1, representatives from the Vietnam - Korea Business and Investment Association (VKBIA) and the "Saigon Share" volunteering group visited and presented medical equipment and supplies for frontline facilities in preventing and controlling the pandemic in Go Vap district. Go Vap is now the biggest Covid-19 hotspot in Ho Chi Minh City and has implemented social distancing measure under the government’s directive 16.

The donations including 75,000 face masks and 350 protective suits were presented by Vice Chairman of VKBIA in the southern region Duong Quang Phu and the leader of the volunteering group “Saigon Share” Truong Hanh Cong Dan and its members.

Phu said the functional forces were always on duty and reminded residents to maintain a safe distance from each other while waiting for their samples to be taken. Each turn, the number of people having their samples taken is also limited. Only Go Vap district’s ward 5 has taken 55.000 samples from residents. Therefore, medical and frontline workers in the district have been under pressure and faced a high risk of contracting the virus.

Meanwhile, Dan hoped that the aid would partly help the Go Vap district to soon stamp out the outbreak.

Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) of Go Vap District Nguyen Thi Thao expressed thanks to the VKBIA and “Saigon Share” for their valuable assistance.
